Looking back on this item, with the defense and spirit this would be an awesome tanking sword for deathknights if it was not for the fact they most likely start out at a much higher level then the sword, the reason i saw this, is because as you may or may not know deathknights tank with duel wielding or a two hander, as they can not use shields and can only use bladed weapons

Why would a Death Knight need spirit? Once again... DEATH KNIGHT ABILITIES ARE NOT SPELLS. They receive no benefit from intellect, spirit, or spell power. On a side note, at lower levels mobs do not hit very hard. Stamina is better than any defense stat for tanking.

Jija+0via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

Please note that this comment is over 7 years old now. In the intervening years the +Defence stat which used to give dodge and parry has been replaced with +Dodge (and the item updated to reflect that). Also, +spirit gave passive and (in)combat regeneration, and was useful to most classes, but there were always more useful stats for tanks to acquire. This was never intended for or used by Death Knights because there were none in the game at the time, they arrived in a later expansion.

This is probably the most illogically itemized piece of gear in the game. None of the classes who can use two handed swords gain even the slightest benefit from spirit, and we all know how smart using a two hander is to tank (Death Knights notwithstanding, but this sword is much lower level than they will start out).

Well, Blizzard didn't learn itemization until TBC, but I think alot of people would be just fine that when they're soloing they take significantly less damage from mobs, but that's just me. The spirit is a complete waste... unless... you're a troll. So obviously this is for Troll warriors.

vazhkatsi+5via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

yes, but the defense increases dodge and parry which certainly help you while soloing, and might be decent for pvp. personally i occasionally solo in defensive stance for revenge procs, its cooldown is short, and with increased parry and dodge it would proc a lot more

Honestly, as low as level 26, it doesn't matter *that* significantly if you don't use a shield when you tank. Holy Shield as a Paladin is their first shield-related ability, and they can't learn that until level 40. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the same holds true for Shield Slam for Warriors. Therefore, this isn't really a terrible weapon to use as a tank between levels 26-39. Though the spirit is still kind of silly.

vazhkatsi+1via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

shield bash isn't the same as shield slam, one is an interrupt and one is a damaging threat ability. of course, this is now moot as warriors get shield slam at 10, but i remember leveling a warrior and only using sunder armor for threat for a good 20 levels.

This is neither a good weapon for tanking nor for healing. Only paladin healers can even equip this and as a tanking weapon DKs simply outlevel it, druids can't use it and warriors + paladins lose their block chance and also their block related abilities. I think this picture matches my reaction when seeing this strange item.

This item is a fantastic reminder of the strange itemization from classic. Taken as such, it is still a useful item: One that you can point at and be like "That's what we had back then." When we had to WALK to dungeons! With NO snow OR rain! UPHILL BOTH WAYS!
