This is still an interesting item after the expansion, maybe even more so now. Dark Iron Ore is quite cheap to have now, as people rather make gear from Fel Iron.
If you are ready to get the smelting skill for Dark Iron (in Blackrock Depths), you can bring along plenty of Dark Iron Ore and the rest of the parts needed to make this rifle during a BRD run.
I have found that I can sell them for a nice profit. If you get them at level 50 it's a very good weapon -- that explains why people are ready to pay quite a high price for it.

Something I feel is overlooked here...
The Shadow Shot procs. Often. It's like an unwritten boost to your dps in shadow damage. I think this is a fantastic upgrade for most ranged attackers.
Remember, that Dark iron bar equals to 8 Dark Iron ores. So - 48 Dark Iron ores to that list And, I'm a lvl 57 MM Hunter. This gun is neat, I deliver 1.9k+ with Aimed shot on critters :) I've had it since i was lvl 50, and the mats wasn't so cruel. Easy to get, and the gun with last nicely with you until you reach Outland. Remember, this beast gotta be made at the Black anvil in Black Rock Deeps.

to me it seems like this would be a bit of a waste, http://www.wowhead.com/?item=19107 is available only one level later, much more easily, and it has a very high dps and very slow speed, really ideal for a hunter pre-steady shot. only problem is that strength, but meh, whatcha gonna do?
This seems like the gun the Big Game Hunter uses.
PLEASE NOTE. Must use black anvil to make it. Aka if your not an engineer and getting engineer to make it for you.
With damage normalized off a 2.7 speed, does it really matter all that much how much slower this weapon is? Especially pre-steady shot? But yeah, easier to get (if your faction can win AV on your realm) and higher dps.
RAW mats are like: thorium ores, not thorium bars!
Remember that for that u need to have ppl playing AV at that lvl bracket. I had to wait 2 hours on my mage to get the wand and AV was abt to go down cause there wasnt enough Alliance players. Around 36 horde for barely 10 alliance. Worths the wait though :) Kept the wand untill 62~63 when i speced fire so i believe other weapons will last a couple of lvls, including the bow :P
An incredible gun, best option on lvl 50! The shadow bolts can increase many of your DPS! try it!
I paid about 200g on AH and it worths it!
