This item has a pretty high proc rate, however, has a 50% chance on successful block to take 1 point of durability.

It has some good points, and some bad points. Namely:

Good: 1) Additional damage = additional aggro. 2) High proc rate. 3) Great for multiple target aggro. 4) Decent stats.

Bad: 1) Can break CC (Sheep, sap, etc.) 2) Can get real expensive, and may not last an entire instance run. (read: raid) 3) Does require you to be a 300 Engineer.

Overall, a great situational piece. Has its ups and downs, and may be good just in certain situations.

Actually, it was in the 1.9 patch, and it didn't do 100-200 nature damage, it just stacked with the spell damage you had on your toon. This was done, one can suspect, since the paladin t2 set, Judgement, was changed to give spell damage and not only healing in the same patch.

I'm a 70 prot tank and I still have one of these babies in my bags at all times, hotkeyed to switch to it in combat at a pinch. It's the sole reason i'm keeping Engineering. It's quite simply one of the most useful items I've ever made as a tank. Absolutely nothing compares to the damage and AOE aggro that this thing can spew out when you're facing huge hordes of mobs. The birds in Sethekk, the swarms of skeletons in Auchenai, tanking bug adds in TAQ on Fankriss, tanking gauntlets of non-elites. Any kind of situation where you're facing lesser mobs, perhaps 8 or more at once (enough to make thunderclap, cleaving and tab-revenge/sundering not quite good enough to reliably hold aggro), this thing shines. It does more and more damage the more things there are that attack you, as each block returns the damage to -everything- around you, not just the monster who's attack you blocked. This is not a shield for regular use. You keep it in your bags, and when you get swarmed by hundreds of mobs, swap to this shield, aoe taunt, and the constant blasts of nature damage should keep most things glued to you. The low armor compared to 70 shields, low stamina, and lack of defense make it very situational, but I -urge- any Warrior who's an engineer to make themselves one of these and try it on a large pack of mobs. It's surprisingly cheap to make too, despite being an epic pattern from MC. The durability can be an issue. 50% chance on a block to lose a durability, so you're looking at 240 blocks on average before it breaks. But, you wont be using this shield to tank an instance with, you'll just have it in your bags for certain pulls, and you can swap to your normal shield in combat once the vasty majority of mobs have been taken out. Easily the most fun item I own. The lightshow when you're tanking 10-20 mobs at once is worth the cost of the mats alone.

Two flaws in your logic: 1) Leveling a paladin just to have some AE tanking is a huge pain, and fairly counter-productive. The example was as a warrior, tanking multiple less-level mobs. 2) The damage dealt from this shield is instant damage to all targets currently hitting the tank when any attack gets blocked. The Sporregar reputation shield is a DoT that only affects the on target that was blocked. For aggro generation, the Force Reactive Disk is far superior. Also, another thing to note is that you can put a shield spike on this for added reflective damage, and since it is not unique,

If you are a Protection Paladin as well as a Gnomish Engineer and you do not have this shield in your bag you need to change your profession. That said, most players fail to realize that while engineer items have draw backs the benefits far outweigh them. As mentioned above this is a Situational Item, you have large groups or trash mobs or boss fights that have trash pulls to go with it. Places like BWL or TAQ. Remember Engineers carry REPAIR BOTS So Fixing Gear in Raids should never be a problem. RIGHT?!?!?!?!?

63403+10via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

It should be noted that this shield can only "proc" once per second. Thus once you have enough mobs to cause one block per second, adding more mobs does not increase the damage it puts out per-mob.

EDIT: This cooldown has been removed or shortened with patch 2.4: I use it on the worm pulls in the hallway in Magister's Terrace and it is going off more frequently then before. That hallway alone puts it down to less then 10 durability.

I just got piece of it,and it was really worth my 425g i gave for it,i tried it on undeads near honor hold with my 60 prot pally, pulled like 15 of them and the show started,it deals like half the damage of my consecration, doesn't seem to get bonus damage from items(it deals around 30 dmg average, i have ~80 spell damage, base is 25-35 so i think there goes no bonus), but since it's aoe with no mana cost,no aoe, just money cost,it's completely the best thing for AoE tanking even for 70 in some cases imo. After 2 pulls of 10-15 mobs, i was on 70 durability though, costing 95s to repair for

Idocreating+8via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

According to Wowhead, the AoE effect upon blocking does 25 to 35 Nature damage. This is comparable to Petrified Lichen Guard, which at 5 stacks does 60 damage every 3 seconds. This shield is far superior when lots of things are beating you, however the Lichen Guard is a superior farming/AoE tanking shield overall because: 1) This shield will break very quickly in sustained tanking 2) Repairs cost money, cutting into profits made from AoE grinding.

Quest+35via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

Back in the day, the AOE damage used to scale with +DMG gear. ... At a rate of 1:1 Paladins long before BC with 400-500 +DMG with this on and 10+ mobs were doing DPS compatible to a well geared raid rogue right now. You can imagine that it got nerfed soon after that first well geared paladin slapped it on and things just died. Quickly.

Comparison with Petrified Lichen Guard:

Petrified Lichen Guard causes a DoT which causes 12 nature damage every 3 seconds and quickly stacks to 5. 12 * 5 / 3 = 20, so the end result of this is that every target beating on you is soon taking 20 DPS.

Force Reactive Disk causes an average of 30 nature damage to every target within 5 yards every time you block. The amount of blocking you'll be doing will vary depending on your block rating and the attack speed of the mobs attacking you, but generally, if you've got a big cloud of mobs in front of you, you can expect a near-constant stream of lightning out of your shield. The more mobs that are attacking you, the more damage each one will take (unlike the Lichen Guard, which does a constant amount of damage against every mob attacking you).

All of this is of course independent of any other reflective damage you may be doing. (Examples: Retribution Aura, Felsteel Shield Spike [you ARE putting a shield spike on this bad boy, aren't you?], Darkmoon Card: Vengeance, etc.)

For killing lots of mobs very quickly, the Force Reactive Disk is the clear winner for as long as it lasts, especially against mobs that die quickly and therefore won't have time for the DoT to stack. You get about 240 blocks out of it before it's time for a trip to the repairman. If you're swimming in cash, get a second one made. Keep the Lichen Guard in your bags for regular use and switch to this when you want a big DPS burst. (If you're tanking a single tough creature, such as a boss, the Lichen Guard is better both for its DoT and for its armor, block rating, and stamina, but you should probably be using a "normal" shield for that anyway.)

Summary: This is an utterly amazing item for tanking engineers, with far better AoE DPS output than the already-cool Petrified Lichen Guard. It doesn't last very long, it costs money to use, and you must be an engineer to equip it, but it's the best shield in the game for quickly burning down large groups of mobs. If you can find an engineer who's a veteran of Molten Core, get them to make you one or more without delay.

No-one's mentioned that this shield's the one that Gelbin Mekkatorque in Tinker Town has :) Just thought to add that, as a roleplayer, because getting a perfect Mekkatorque outfit was one of the first things I did on my 70 gnome warrior.

Have a pally Tank that still uses this in Heroics at lvl 70. Got the drop for my Hunter Eng back in the day.. Lor carries 4 of these where ever he goes. One of the most awesome pieces of gear ever made in WoW. Here is Loradin at lvl 59-60 in EPL. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUYPQMnacnk

280141-4via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

Can any paladins comment on the remaining usefulness of this item, in wotlk? As I understand, the damage does not scale with anything, and thus does a flat 30 aoe damage when it procs. That is 240 blocks, meaning 7200 aoe damage. So is this thing even useful anymore, given consecration and retribution aura?

149205+5via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

240*30 = 7200 dmg to a single target, obviously multiplied per mob you have sitting in front of you. also i don't believe anybody has said this shield was for *serious* content. he's asking if it's useful for aoe grinding at 80. to answer that: while the damage doesn't scale and thus makes up a significantly smaller portion of your dps. it is damage and it is still better short term than the lichen. is it worth it to go get one made, probably not should you toss your old one because its not omg awesome? probably not this item, as it always was, is more for the fun of it than anything else

Asmodoues+7via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

I'm not sure where you're getting the 7200 AoE damage from- you would have to be tanking around 250-300 mobs at once to get 7200 damage from a proc. It wasn't that useful in BC, and it's even less useful in WotLK- for any serious content, the mitigation and threat you would lose from trading out a shield with better block value far outweighs a 30 damage proc that gains nothing from your threat-boosting abilities as a paladin. It's a novelty item. But what a novelty item. There is no greater joy than hurling lightning at 30 guys in the Stockade.

106006-1via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

At 80 dmg levels, I do not believe it is useful at all any more compared to any other options. It was great fun at 60+, and even useful at 70/bc for aoe stuff. It may still be optimum for lower-level farming, however, assuming you are carrying several. When doing large aoe pulls at 70 on older content, it could be 10% of my dps. The non-scaling is a death-knell for this item's pragmatic utility at 80, though.

DarkKnightX-1via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

I have used this shield for AoE farming and Hyjal/BT/Sunwell for heavy nuking @ 70. It has allowed my DPS crew to go all out on everything. Prior to the AoE cap, this shield was very good for Thorim adds, large groups of trash mobs, and Achievement farming whelps in Onyxia while topping meters as a tank @ 80. It's sad to see that this shield cannot be re-engineered to 85 content, but, many like myself have used this shield well past Lvl 60 content for what it did best: Complete and Absolute AoE threat.

240479+59via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

you can really have some fun I have realized with nature damage in this game. Every one keeps referring to this shield's proc as a "light show" if that is the case why not bump it up to the next level and apply a Crystal Spire to all that AOE, heck. Even poping Ramstien's Lighting Bolts on cooldown will really light up the room. Before you pull anything though be sure to get your fill of Stormchops because more random lighting is always fun. Speaking of more lightning that brings to mind the Thunder Capacitor to mind. What good would all this be if your target had some kind of resistance to nature damage however... I know! lets get some NR de-buffs up there by procking a few Thunderfury swings!

...now we are talking light show. As of right now, all I'm missing for my epic AOE light show is my Baron binding /sad panda

Kalx-4via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

This shield is still great in WotLK, for AoE threat generation against large groups of monters. Use shield block/holy shield then switch to this shield and the monsters won't ever give you up, and you're not letting down your partners on the raid/instance! If you're an tank and are engineer, have one of these all the time in your bags, it WILL be worth it. Only use it in groups of 4+ monsters, it's where this shield shows it's true potential, and, as someone posted above, a really nice light show.

Disregard this post, Just got it crafted.

No longer needed as I managed to find a very nice undead to craft this for me.

Can anyone on Azuremyst make this? Horde side please? Add noyjitat to your friends list ingame and send me a tell or send me some mail. I'd love to get this crafted at some point.

I'll update my post when I no longer need assistance.

The proc from this has nothing to do with block value. nickthegrrr is reffering to the block chance increase from shield block, forcing every hit to become a block. Say you pull 10 mobs, so as to not mess around with aoe caps, and lets say each one of them hits every 2 seconds. Thats roughly one attack every 0.2 seconds, or 50 attacks for the 10 seconds that shield block is up. At level 60 with an example 10% dodge and 10% parry, only 80% of those attacks are going to be blocked, and the rest dodged or parried while shield block is up. That leaves us with 40 blocks in 10 seconds. If each b

448060+2via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

Nope. It's bad dmg and bad threat all the time. Especially for shield block which is based on shield block value and this only has a value of 58. Moot point though as in a few weeks as the block value mechanic is being removed from the game.

248965+3via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

No, it's not bad for AOE. First, it's useable at 60 and you don't get shockwave until 69, so your comparison there fails. Second, it's not an "either/or" where you use the disk or you TC/Cleave, it's in addition to those abilities. Third, it scales with the number of mobs, so given the levels this item will see use at it's equivalent to an extra TC at about 5 mobs and quickly becomes better than that as you increase the number of things beating on you. It's not an 85 item. It's for situational uses and it's costly, but it's not "bad".
240*30 = 7200 dmg to a single target, obviously multiplied per mob you have sitting in front of you.
That's how it used to work. I loved this shield. I used to pull all of Gnomer in one massive pull using it. I just tried it on the Onyxia whelp achievement and does not have that exponential damage curve any longer. The proc appears to have the standard AoE damage cap. Either way it's nerfed for AoE and that was it's only use. Now it's just a toy with fond memories. From my log: # of Blocks: 84 Force reactive disk Procs: --------------------------------- # of hits (crits): 452 (91) avg hit (crits): 8.6 (13.7) total dmg: 5142 Compare to that the damage I did with Ret aura (79006) and Consecration* (231388) in the same period of time and force reactive disk's proc is negligible. Force Reactive Disk proc is laughable even compared the 31742 dmg done by a single Global Thermal Sapper Charge. Expected damage without an AoE cap doing 25-35 damage would be 16290 total damage excluding crits instead of the observed 5142. So results were less than a 3rd of the math said it should have been. Ashame. I really loved this shield. It's still exceptionally good for AoE dps at lvl 60 but I can't think of a single reason why anyone would want to use it even at 60 given other options. *Consecration doesn't have an AoE cap. Sapper charge does have a cap and also did a 3rd of what it should have.

448060+8via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

The spell "Shield Block" used to do the following: Increases chance to block and block value by 100% for 10 sec. Note the doubling of block value. The discussion is based on that. Yes it was bad threat based on that ability. Why? Because other warrior threat generating abilities were based off of the (now defunct) block value stat. For example, the old shield slam. Tiny block value x2 = still tiny block value. If you gimped your block value, you gimped your other abilities that generated dmg and threat. Read what I said above:
That's how it used to work. [...] It's still exceptionally good for AoE dps at lvl 60 but I can't think of a single reason why anyone would want to use it even at 60 given other options.
It's bad threat because you are using theory and not testing that theory. I tested it and had real numbers to back up what I said above. It wasn't doing anywhere close to 12000 total dmg in 10 sec (or even 20sec) in a best case scenario. That's with it damage capped so there's no possibility of increasing it past that cap. I'm not the only one who tested it and found out what it really does. Other posters above came to similar conclusions. It's bad because it is only good for one specific thing: AoE tanking at lvl 60-61. Except that situation does not exist. If you want threat and dps, grab a green "of Strength" shield from Burning Crusade. Those have +23 Strength which will get you further. If you want aoe dmg/threat then throw a bomb. You'll be 30 times better off than this shield.

This shield has a model unique among player-equipped gear. If you are looking for an interesting shield for transmogrification, then Force Reactive Disk ought to be among your considerations. Off-topic: that item name makes the science nerd in me giggle every time.
