I think it lowers your gear score average which is most prominently shown on your battle.net profile. It'd be nice if equipped item average was shown boldly instead. Oh well, spread da words!

so you need Arclight Spanner and the blacksmith hammer when you get to a certain lvl of engineer ?

I think the point is that it is a tool, like the blacksmith's hammer.

Note: In Borean Tundra, an Arclight Spanner, along with a Mining Pick, will allow you to "skin" the Mechanicals running around in the Geyser Fields. Unknown yet if this also applies to Mechanicals elsewhere. Again, Mechanicals will need an Arclight Spanner to be "skinned" by Miners.

hope everyone knows about the Gnomish Army Knife by know (combinign an arclight spanner and gyromatic micro-adjuster (as well as 5 other things) into ONE bag slot! lol. yehaw! love the gadgets.

It's probably a good idea to upgrade to using a Gnomish Army Knife (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=40772) as soon as the budding engineer has the money or mats to get one. Good way to save bag space :] Although someone first creating the Arclight Spanner probably won't have the mats for the GAK, they run relatively cheap on most servers (under 3g), and saving that extra few bag slots gives you more room for stuff to sell, paying back very quickly.

odd that hitting someone with a wrench will deal more damage than slashing someone with a machete lol

I personally want to make a Spanish looking black haired Human with a macro that says a "Spaniard in the Works" it might just work... (anyone who didn't get that bit it's from John Lennon book a Spaniard in The Works[which in turn is coined from the phrase a Spanner in the works])

Would be nice if this used the Engineering skill as a weapon skill like the Fishing Rods use the fishing skill

If you can dodge an arclight spanner, you can dodge a fireball. At least, that's the idea when preparing for Raid bosses like Ragnaros...

In fact, "spanner" is essentially the same as "wrench." The first is British English, and the second is American English.

Since this iconic item can't be used in Transmog (because stupid limit saying that Common items can't be used), anyone know of any nice engineer-y weapons that a caster could use? The only other two that use the model have both been removed from the game.

For all of your roleplay needs, I compiled a list of occupational tools for everyday heroes. Look at a weapon's "Item Versions" or "Same model as" tab for ones easier to obtain or a different color or weapon type. Higher levels can obtain Appearances for lower-level alts. If you want a quest Appearance from the opposite faction but do not have a character, use a Class Trial. Let me know if I missed a weapon! Good for bartenders, cooks, fishermen, farmers, lumberjacks, miners, blacksmiths, engineers, alchemists, and angry protesters.

Patch 10.0.5 and Blizzard couldn't even make this thing available for transmog. Just... oof.... How a billion dollar company can be this incompetent is baffling. Edit: Now it can't even be equipped in a weapon slot, so it has officially been downgraded.

The new profession equipment no longer requires Engineers to have [item=5956], [item=6219], or [item=10498] in their inventory or equipped as profession equipment.

Does not seem to be sold on Mechagon, presumably because a mechagnome would already have one as a limb.
