You cannot complete quest if he is not with you. I lost him on my way up to the Damsel in the north and nothing happens when he isnt there. So had to go back and get him and it worked fine.
I feel sorry for that male blood elf who lost his crate in the hot spring xD First being mistaken for a woman and his crate as a purse. Yet I can't help laughing at it all.
Oh, and some people on my server had some trouble knowing how to complete the quest. All you need to do is ride up to the damsel and then Maximillian will take care of it (mostly). He can however be kind of slow sometimes. I've had to wait for a while before he reacted to the maiden before, so if he doesn't do anything, just wait.
