In case of confusion, I'll add a few points. Note that this is the infomation of patch 3.3
1. This thing is created by the alchmest him/herself, and it's soulbound upon creation.
2. The recepie is sold by a golblin in Tanaris, and it has infinate stock.
3. You do not need to equip this item which doing any transmutions. (It is worked just like Mining pick, Jewelcrafter's Kit, etc.)
4. This item does not have a CD. The spell does. Re-creating this item will not reset your CD.
5. Transmuting Meta Gems and Titanium Bars will not trigger the 1 day CD. However, the Epic Gems share a CD.
6. You have a chance to discover a new transmution while transmuting Titanium Bars and Epic Gems.
It may also be (and probably is) a reference to classical alchemy. The Philosopher's Stone, aside from possessing a slew of various other qualities, was supposedly able to turn base metals (e.g. iron) into gold. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philosopher%27s_Stone http://www.quackgrass.com/stone.html Yay knowledge. :D
