Regeneration

Just to give you an idea of how little a difference this racial gives I'll give you an example of what a decently geared priest (the class that would have the most spirit) would regenerate.

The top priest in my guild (who is a blood elf) has 1209 spirit.
This works out to 57 hp/sec for them when out of combat.
Now if they were a troll that would be 10% higher so (57) * (1.1) = 62.7 hp/sec out of combat.
In combat would be (62.7) * (0.1) = 6.27 hp/sec in combat.
Their total health is 17930 so in combat they would regenerate [(6.27) / (17930)] * 100 = 0.035% of her total hp regenerated every second.
That means it would take 29 sec to regen 1% of her total hp in combat.

Now another example for a warrior.
Once again a warrior tank will have base spirit, which in this case is 60 spirit.
This works out to be 33 hp/sec for them when out of combat.
If they were a troll: (33) * (1.1) = 36.3 hp/sec out of combat
In combat would be: (36.3) * (0.1) = 3.63 hp sec in combat
Their total hp is 41066 so in combat they would regenerate [(3.63) / (41066)] * 100 = 0.0088% of his total hp regenerated every second.
That means it would take 113 sec (or 1 min and 53 sec) to regenerate 1% of his total hp.

So as you can tell this racial makes VERY little difference.
By comparison having a level 1 paladin follow you around and spamming their level 1 heal would be about 20 hp/sec which is 4 times better then this racial.

This has to be the most amazing thing I have read ever.

It should make you Immune to Disarm effects, because you can simply GROW A NEW ARM!

I think we're all forgetting the days of Troll Throwing Specialization.

I can see how it would be nice, for a passive anyhow =) Assuming you have ~50 health/3, this would make it so you regenerate 55 health/3 out-of-combat and 5.5 health/3 while in combat. Not exceptional, for sure, but when you survive a fight with 5 hit points left, you know what to thank =)

Regeneration has become more useful in Cataclysm.

Currently, it appears that Health Regeneration has been standardized to one percent of maximum HP every two seconds, regardless of your Spirit, when out of combat and zilch when in combat. Trolls, however, regenerate 1.1% of their HP every two seconds out of combat and 0.11% of their maximum HP every two seconds in combat.

Ultimately, a Troll regenerates 0.055% of their HP every second in combat. This may not sound tremendous at first glance, but over the course of a five minute fight it means a Troll has the potential to regenerate 16.5% of their total HP (modified downward by how much time they spend at maximum HP). Given a source of steady, constant damage, it wouldn't be unfair to claim regeneration could easily increase your total HP by 15% over five minutes. If a fight lasts six minutes, that number rises to nearly 20%.

A huge mark in favor of Troll Tanks.

Why not have "increase healing effects on you by 1%" ? Like how worgen have 1% more crit, goblin 1% more attack speed.

I'm regenerating 5 hp/ 5 seconds and there is absolutely NOTHING you can do about it!

Heh. A funny racial, if only a bit on the useless side of the spectrum... I remember trying to stack spirit, +regeneration items and such in addition to normal gear on my old troll warrior in the first year of vanilla or so. Didn't really work, but was fun nonetheless.

What it should really do, is allow you to allow cut-off extremeties... only bigger!

I found out that it increases the health you gain from food by 10%. Anything with the effect [Apply Aura] Mod Health Regen. Which is currently only food. It would be nice if it worked with bandages too perhaps. Possibly helpful if you have a mage arena partner. In addition i'm thinking it should increase healing done to you by 1%

Easy way how to calculate your trolls hp regeneration in combat:

0,0011 x [Your HP] = HP / 2 sec

My troll got 111247 hp so im regenerating 123-124 hp / 2 sec

Not as useful as it sounds unless you plan on loading up on spirit - does not work with HP/5.

For those wondering how it works on patch 7.0 in the legion expansion:

You regen 1% max HP per 2 seconds out of combat

So you'd regen 0.11% max hp per 2 seconds while in combat.

Assume a troll with 3.000.000,00 HP

(3.000.000*0.11)/100 = 3300

He'd regenerate 3.3k health per 2 seconds

If you got [item=133577] you can pretty much do that value times 10.

So our troll would regen 33k per 2 seconds

i think this is a cool passive. Its not anything amazing, but as archangel said, if you barely live, you know what to thank. i mean, ony can last up to lets say... 6 minutes (never timed a ony run). take my paladin for an example (yes, i know pallys cant have this). his regen is 45/3. thats 540 health, not amazing, but not nothin

My take would be to have 3% health regen every 3 seconds while under 35% health.
That's a decent amount but with a strict restriction.

I disagree. This is the 2nd worst racial. Dwarf Find Treasure is probably the worst. Anyways, I digress, this is such a terrible racial because 10% more of almost nothing is slightly above next to nothing. Also, 10% of next to nothing in combat is practically insignificant. They really need to fix health regeneration, in general, and this ability would be worth something.

It's on all the time. No cooldown. That's one of the main reasons I like it. The other reason is because on my troll warrior, it feels good. It's free healing, even if the number is small, greater than any other race. Because of this I rolled a troll warrior and it's by far my favorite tank.

This racial proves quite potent on both Troll Druids and Troll Death Knights while soloing. Regenerating on 0.11% HP/2Sec seems almost worthwhile on standard raid encounters for the current endgame. But think about soloing some WotLK bosses. Those fights are never gonna allow you to have topped-off health pools and are gonna last upwards of 15 minutes. Sometimes even more. Think how much better this racial would be than the Tauren racial for this purporse.

What they ought to do is just, essentially, make it into free food-- you get a button called "Focused Regeneration" which, when you hit, simply acts as if you began eating a piece of food/drink of appropriate level for all intents and purposes. Give it a 30 second cooldown and make it usable underwater and you've pretty much got something each troll would happily use; it would be more convenient than actual food/water, easier to use, largely more useful and also aesthetically truer to the whole "Trolls regenerate like a mo-fo" idea. At the same time, even being vastly more useful than Regene

Yes but how does that compare to how much healing a tank receives in a 5-6 minute fight? With tanks having around 150k health at the moment, 20% would give about 30k. That's one to two global cooldowns for most people and an absolute pittance compared to the millions of HP going through a tank in a fight of that length. Maybe Blizzard is just trolling the trolls...

Surprisingly there is no comments post WoD about this special racial.

All the health regen 'out of combat' effects and reformulations that took place vastly increased the effectiveness (relatively). Most classes regen hp 100-200% faster out of combat now, something like 3-10% their hp per 5 second (so a troll would get 1% max hp per 5 seconds). With several sweet conditional perks.... You can regenerate 50-100% your max hp in 10 seconds or so after leaving combat thanks to a careful selection of passive items in your inventory, and garrison building choices, this allow(ed)(s) a troll to regen ~10% max hp per 5 seconds while in combat in the outside world (and ashran) and around 2.5-5% in select battlegrounds and arenas (pandaria or WoD flagged areas).

If you are a troll warlock or troll feral druid, or any of the class specs that grant massive bonus self regeneration effects (think certain tank talents/items/etc) this is usually increased another 20% or more.

So with the right selection as a hunter or warlock for instance you could be regenning around 13-27% max hp 5 seconds if you really gamed and took all the options!

THIS GETS PRETTY CRAZY the moment you drop combat in pvp as well easily passive regenning to full very quickly in arena while in stealth or such!

VERY powerful for stealth based classes or any class that can 'drop combat' for at least 5 seconds.

Currently you must be out of combat for a full 5 seconds to gain the full benefit of this racial trait (the regen is back end loaded toward the end of each 5 second period).

Well I agree it doesn't scale too well for most classes but this racial, along with a good portion of base spirit, will make you one of the toughest in the Arena where you can use the time out of combat to regenerate those extra few hit points needed to survive and potentially win the match. In a situation where you can incapacitate the opponent, it sure will count for something adding up the amount of hp regenerated. Maybe nothing extraordinary but may make all the difference.

That sounds exactly right :) It will give a very nice buff to leveling/soloing trolls, while not making them OP in raids (considering how long you spend under 35%) or in Arena (other racials would still be better). It would be a very attractive racial to go for.

Would be very nice if they buffed this to be a % of total hp/5 or something along the lines of the ony trinket http://www.wowhead.com/?item=49487 or shard of the flame http://www.wowhead.com/?item=49464, combined with bloodthirst http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=23881.. Even 0.25 % of say 30k health would be 75hp/5 at 80.. sounds reasonable doesn't it? especially compared to the best troll's blood pot (lvl 60 item) http://www.wowhead.com/?item=20004, which is 20hp/5... doesn't make much sense for a potion to be based off of a troll's blood when troll's themselves don't receive that kind of rege

But if you already used a pot and intercepted to bandage, the regen (slight as it may be) could hold you off to intercept and bandage one more time in order to use another pot (rinse and repeat). Combined with 'zerking, I'd say trolls have the best racials (next to undead, of course).

Interesting idea! They could make it like the hunter ability regen 2% hp every few seconds at all times. Since it's just a racial, make it 2% of base hp. That's probably only 50 hp at the most. Doesn't seem that overpowered to me.

Only undeads might have a problem with it, since after chain-nerfing Will of the Forsaken and giving Dranei also the Shadow Protection racial, Cannibalize is basically their only one unique racial ability (underwater breath, blizzard? really?). Giving trolls the ability you suggest, would be basically the same as giving them Cannibalize, only better since it doesn't require an Undead/Humanoid corpse.
