You no longer have to visit any of the npcs in BC, it can all be done in your home city.
- First, to unlearn your current spec there is a button on your Professions tab in your spellbook that says "Unlearn this specialization."
- Second, you return to your alchemy trainer and accept the appropriate quest for the new spec. They are: Elixir Master, Potion Master, and Transmutation Master. Complete the quest and you earn the new specialization.
Thankfully they made this change, but the only thing worse than the old method of flying to BC locations is flying there for no reason. Please vote this up so people can find the info easily.

You'll need skill level of 350 and be level 68 to start the quest for mastery.

The flasks and other potions in general are easier to make based on their components, plus there's an Alchemy Lab in a major Outland city. In addition, Alchemists can make a bind on pickup item (Alchemist's Stone) and specialize in Potion, Transmutes, or Elixirs. Specializing gives a chance to make an extra item whenever that item is crafted.
I was wondering about the exact bonus this specialization yields. Most comments mention something around 20%, but it usually remains ambiguous if that refers to the proc chance or the extra materials.
Then there is the issue of greater procs. Do they each have a set chance? Are they procs of procs?
I decided to do my own test. Here are the results of 600 trillium bar transmutes:
Total transmutes 600
Number of procs 102 - 17.0%
Total trillium 719 - 19.8% extra
x2 procs 92 - 15.3%
x3 procs 5 - 0.8%
x4 procs 3 - 0.5%
x5 procs 2 - 0.3%With some rounding the results seem to indicate around 15% proc chance, generating about 20% extra materials.
Procs usually generate double materials, with around 1/10 chance to generate triple, quadruple or quintuple materials instead. The number of multiprocs is a little low to draw a sound conclusion, but their chance seems to be around 1% or lower with a tentative slope favoring the smaller procs.
Keep in mind that while 600 transmutes gives a fair indication of these chances, it's not a huge sample size. Especially the lower numbers could use some more polish. I will update the table if I repeat the test in the future.

To learn an alchemy mastery you will have to do a quest. Lilyssia Nightbreeze is the Alliance quest giver and Yelmak is the Horde quest giver. All quests have been upgraded to Cataclysm ingredients.

Before Selecting a new Specialization, you must first get rid of your old one. To do so, Open up your professions tab and beside your alchemy specialization icon, there will be a RED Cross out symbol (Just like dropping an actual profession).
All you do is hit that to unlearn your current specialization.Once you have done that, the alchemy trainer in Stormwind City or Orgrimmar will open up the 3 quest below. Pick one and bring back the required items and you have a new Alchemy Specialization! Choose carefully, the mats turn in are not cheap !

In my view it depends partially whether you look at it as an individual or guild, and partially on how much & what style of raiding you do:
- Elixir Mastery procs on flasks & elixirs - the major advantage being the extra flasks. Flasks are mostly only available to those who've done some serious rep grinding, while simultaneously being of most use to those who're raiding new content - situations where you're expecting to wipe multiple times getting the strategy down. Most/all classes actually get more benefit out of a battle/guardian combo, the key use of Flasks being when you expect to wipe a bit & you'd rather only use 1 flask for 2 hours rather than having to drink another elixir/pot after every wipe.
- Potion Mastery is probably best for the genuine casual player - people who aren't going to be logging in every day and just like a bit of weekend WoW. You can farm up whatever potion's selling the best & make boatloads of them, getting a bit of extra gold to finance your character and hopefully buy some nice crafted/BoE items to make up for the high-end raid gear you're missing out on.
- Transmution Mastery is the most use to a serious guild. If you're a serious, organised guild then it's advantageous if you only have 1 or 2 Flask & Potion masters who make all the guild's pots - they should be helped grind through so they have every rep and drop formula, & with the amount of stuff they're making should get all the discoveries quite rapidly. While this might sound appealing for those 2-4 players getting all the recipes, but remember that they'll need to be available regularly to spend *hours* just pumping out potions/elixirs/flasks like some sorta alchemical dairy cow - it's a great way to burn people out & make them quit the game. Every other alchemist in the guild should be a Transmute Master and be pumping out Primal Might &/or the two diamonds every day - the transmutes which you can *only* get via being an alchemist, and hence which have greater supply/demand issues because of the xmute cooldown. Don't bother with the normal primal transmutes - they can be farmed, hence it's a wasted CD.
On an individual cash front: Pots or Flasks is the way to go, depending on your commitment to rep grinding. On my server stuff like Primal Might is actually worth equal to slightly less than the mat costs, and given the once-a-day pray-for-a-proc nature you just can't compete with the profit margin on pots/flasks. In my case, it's been 10 xmutes since i had an xmute proc hence I'm either breaking even or loosing small amount of money on all those 10 xmutes - if I'd spent the same amount of time farming for herbs as I have for primals I'd be waaaay ahead on the gold front, even if my 11th xmute later today were to proc for 5 primal mights.
On the other hand, with Transmution Mastery you're producing slightly more of a fundamentally limited commodity so it's primary use is if you actually need that commodity and would rather be self-sustainably farming rather than running the risk of demand/supply price fluctuations on the AH. Making everyone in the guild a flask/potions master & gambling that the extra gold will always just enable you to buy someone else's transmutes would be an option, but it's a higher risk approach which means you're in more trouble when new content comes out (prices rise dramatically & you have to grin and pay it or do without).
Yes, that's exactly what it is. For transmuters, it means you sometimes get 2 Primal Mights from 1 transmute. Or for elixir/potion masters, to get 2 elixirs/potions for the mat of 1. (To a maximum of 5 potions/elixirs/transmutes for the mats of 1)
I made like over 20 transmutes, I was sure this mastery was bugged or broken, then suddenly BLAM, you create 5x primal might. What I'm trying to say is if you don't get any procs in 20 transmutes, don't worry, eventually you will.
The CD now resets at midnight server time instead of a 20 hour CD. So if you transmute a gem at 11 pm your CD is 1 hour instead of 20 hours. If you make one at 1 am your CD is 23 hours. Hope this helps.
375 Alchemy, Transmutation Mastery, Did a primal might transmute and got 5x Primal Mights. When this does proc, it is definitely nice.
That really isn't that bad of a ratio considering primal might is going for a minumum of 120g on my server. I don't know about you, but I could always use a little extra gold. Just don't expect it every time and you'll end up a happy camper.
As of 4.3.0, Transmutation Master, Potion Master and Elixir Master now have different requirements to learn/change your specialization.
Instead of paying 150 gold to change, it is now changed to 450 gold.
Bring the requested materials to an alchemy trainer in any capital city.

#4 Offer the full results of the transmute to whoever is buying, but at a higher price. You have a 20% chance of producing 1-4 extra products. If it's a Primal Might transmute, and that sells for 100g on your server, the expected value of the extra is 100g * 20% * (1 + 4) * 4 / 2 / 4 = 50g.When I first learned my transmute mastery, I logged all my transmutes for about two months. Overall, I netted 20% extra primals, NOT 20% proc rate. My proc rate was lower but the net was about 20% if you consider that some procs are for 2, 3 or 4 additional ones. This was around patch 2.2 time.
According to my math then, the value of a transmute if 120% of the value of the final product, i.e. if what you're transmuting is 100g then the "value" of it is 120g.
Unfortunately, on my server sometimes people don't even tip 20g, which means it isn't worth it for me to hang around and transmute for other people. Even at 20g tip, that's the true value of your transmute assuming it was free to train (which it is not).
Skyfire diamonds now sell for about 200g on my server. I do not kid myself that anyone would ever tip me 40g to transmute a diamond, even for cases when it does not proc.
Of course, the above tip statistics assume that you hand out any procced stuff.
A big problem (again, on my server) is that some alchemists don't really understand business (or basic math). Primal mights often sell for less than the cost of their mats. (and if you factor in the 20% profit, you might break even if you're lucky). And if you try to trade mats for mights, people often don't tip. People think this is reasonable behavior probably because there are alchemists out there who don't speak up.
Fanlepleh, is incorrect, disregard his statement. If you drop a spec, you pay 150g to the person who's spec you currently are, so for example pay 150g to the guy in shat, and you are no longer an elixir spec. Once this is done, all three spec trainers will gain a dialog option saying something along the lines of, 'I've relearned alchemy, and would like to specialize in <insert specilization>'. In Patch 3.2.0 transmute spec will get a major boost (which is great since it has been kinda lagging since LK dropped).
The following gems can be transmuted by an Alchemist without a cooldown. The link is to a blue post confirming what Alchemists on the PTR are experiencing. I have xmuted dozens in a row and the lack of CD is not a bug. So, expect the epic gems to come more into a reasonable line as far as prices go after a few weeks of the patch.(6/30/09) Build 10048: The 20 hour CD has been placed on epic xmutes and significant changes have been made to the materials required. The information below has been updated as of the stated build.

- Cardinal Ruby: 1 Scarlet Ruby and 1 Eternal Fire instead of 3 Eye of Zul

Yes, 4 Primal Mights is expensive. On the other hand, if you consider how many free transmutations this will net you over a year... yeah. Its worth it.

You can unlearn xmute mastery from the same NPC that gave you the spec quest which is Zarevhi in Stormspire (Netherstorm). Upon clicking the dialogue bubbles, the last step asks you to pay 150g.
It is worth noting that if you make a discovery while transmuting and the transmute master procs it is possible to make 2 discoveries. This just happened to me, I can submit a screenshot to prove it.

You can transmute a Might or Diamond once a day with this. These are worth roughly 100G each, so you have a hard cap of 100G of mastery alchemy a day if you choose this path.
If you mix more than 100G worth of potions or elixirs/flasks per day on average, choose another path. Otherwise, this one is the best, financially speaking.
In my opinion, transmutation masters can keep any extras they produce transmutating for another player because the player is only paying for the transmuted object, like Truegold, not for any extra items that may be produced because of it. If they want the extras, they should pay for them separately.
Is this reasonable, or am I being selfish?
Edit: I'm posting this because I'm considering switching to Transmutation Master, and I'm not crazy about giving up all its benefits to players who commission it.
Many people are complaining about customers wanting the extra stuff from this spec. Actually, I am an Elixir master. I mostly serve my guild, however I have many discovered flasks that the rest of the server wants.
My advertisement states that, a) I am an Elixir Master, b) I charge a little extra if I am going to be making Elixirs, however c) Extra Elixirs are split 50/50, erring on the side of the customer.
Seriously, you can make bank off of this. Tell them up front, "I charge 10g for the Xmute and I will split any extra Primals with you 50/50, with you getting the lopsided one should there be any." He hands you 10g, plus the mats, you pump out 5xPrimal Mights, he walks away VERY happy with 3, you walk away with an easy 10 gold plus 2xFREE Primal Mights in your pocket!
Don't think in black and white, who gets ALL or NONE of the extras. You can really make extra. Those 20 Xmutes you went through without a single proc, well, at least you got the extra 5g for each Xmute!

As of Patch 4.0.6 the way this functions, at least some ways, has been changed. I have 4x Transmutation Master Alchemists. Every day I go to Uldum and tranmute Living Elements. Previously, I would get the normal 14-16x Air and occasionally another 14-16x of an element (Air, Fire, Water, or Earth). However, since the patch every transmute I have done (8x) has yielded 3-4x of an "extra" volatile element on each character.
It looks like they've flattened out the bonus so instead of getting a 'lucky' lump sum every 5 tries or so, you
get a guaranteedare more likely to get a smaller amount each transmute.No idea if this affects things that could get multiple (like gem xmutes where you could get 1-4 extra) procs as opposed to living elements which was binary (proc or no proc, but always the same value [double] when it did proc)
This is a way too small sample size to deduce anything like an increased proc rate. In addition you likely came here to post your x5 proc and your speculation that proc rate might have been increased because of the x5 proc. :-) There are more or less only 2 ways to throw some more light on this matter
- Blizzard woud finally document how transmutation procs (and discoveries) are implemented (and changed).
- Proc (and discoveries) would be evaluated from a much larger sample size, e. g. the wowhead client would record time (game version) and result of every transmutation.
Strangely enough, you can put this ability on your action bar; clicking it will bring up your alchemy window, so you can actually replace your alchemy button, if you got bored of it.
Interesting bit of trivia, though pointless.
Edit: With the introduction of profession links, this actually does have a use. When opening your profession window with this button, your profession link will read [Transmutation Master] instead of simply [Alchemy].
This is becoming severely incorrect with patch 3.2.0, the addition of transmutable epic gems and the standing ability for procs on ALL northrend xmutes... this is going to demolish the profit margins of elixir and potion, if even for just a month or two. For the xmute speced chemist who is stockpiling the materials to make these gems... it's going to be christmas in the summer.
May I just add there that the skill requirement for the quests (giving the alchemy specializitions) seems to be 475. =)
Well, as stated earlier this doesn't really proc that often. Over the past 25 days i have written down what kind of procs i got, and im not impresed at all:

The last proc I got on my transmutation master was a month ago. Every single 20 hour cooldown later not a single one. Its really frustrating. The proc a month ago was only 2 also.
Finally...yesterday I got a 5 proc on Cardinal Ruby. Took just over a month of nothing at all then bam! I was pleased. Still not sure if its worth it overall but its nice when it hits.
Just a heads up for people thinking about switching to this transmutation mastery. I just switched from elixir to this because i need to make 12 truegold bars and i figured that any proc was worth more then the 150g it cost to respec and the 150g to switch back.
It may have just been good lucky but my very first xmute I got an extra bar. If you need to make a bunch of truegold bars it may be worth switching for the week or two until you have all the bars that you need then switch back to your normal spec.
Anyone else have realy low proc rate on this for Transmute: Living steel?
Ive only used "Transmute: Living steel" and not "Riddle of steel" since i have it on a 80something alt.
Anyways its been 65 days now since i got Alchemy to 600 and learned "Transmute: Living steel", then did the quest for Transmutation Master.
Ive done the Transmute every day, and out of the 65 transmutes ive had 3x procs where i got 1x extra each time.
(also got all 3 procs within the first 15-20 transmutes, so its 45-50x transmutes with no procs...)I know its Lady RNG thats screwing me over, but seriously 3x in 65x transmutes? anyone know if its just me thats realy unlucky or there is some other factor? like maybe the fact that its a lvl82 char doing it...
After my expiriance u have a ca. 15-20 % chance to get x2. Its not a high percentage but if u are only transmuting Primal Might every 24 h its good cash in your pocket. 20 days of Transmuting and u have at least 400 free g. Seemes like a good deal to me.
I'm not sure about Earthstorm and Skyfire Diamonds but all others for me is 20h cooldown.All transmutes now share a 20 hour cooldown. But some of the longer times cited earlier in this thread were correct once upon a time too...

I had leveled my alchemy and herbalism to 450 and chose Elixir Master. Once I hit level 80 I decided to drop alch/herb and pick up mining and skinning, for a change of pace and quick/easy money. After doing that for awhile, I decided to pick alchemy up again (!). I decided to pick Transmutation Master, and I wanted to report that since I had already trained as Elixir Master, I did NOT have to pay 150g to "unlearn" and also I did NOT have to pay 4 Primal Might to learn new mastery. So for anyone who dropped alchemy and is considering picking it up again, I thought you might like this information. Cheers!
I have been transmutation specced since some time in BC. I have been keeping track of all of my transmute procs so far. Barring any major forgetfulness on my part in which I would have neglected to jot down the most recent occurrences, I have procced 49 extra gems/primals/arcanites/titaniums out of 329 casted transmutes. This is a proc rate of 1 in approximately every 7 casts. I have found it to be well worth the happiness it brings my friends and guildies to see their mats become something more than they had hoped for. I am not particularly in this for the profit, as I have plenty of gold to fund my achievement addiction, so I love giving them the procs I make. I did have a dry spell for a while, going on about 50 casts with nothing coming of it. But it was soon made up for with a 5-proc off of a meta and a subsequent increase in overall frequency. Hope this information is useful to someone.
It's funny people dealt with the proc different ways, I had just always worked out with the person the price of the tip for CASTING the transmute itself (was usually 20g-25g on my server completely regardless of what the item was.) and tell them IF it procced I would sell them the second item for the same price as if I had cast the transmute twice for them. So if it didn't I got 20g-25g, if it proced I got 40g-50g and they got both items.
Because the way I saw it, they were paying for the process of casting the spell as a service, and I did not put any time or effort at all into the farming of mats or gold to buy it off AH. I would benefit from procs because it meant I would get the tips 20% more often, and because they were usually asking for the transmute to get more of that item quicker to craft something earlier, they would benefit from the time it saved them as well as 2nd lot of mats, and would be more than happy to pay the extra for the proc, no gambling for either of us.
Sure I would have profited more if I had kept the procs myself, (15g-70g profit if and only if it sold, because primals sold for 35g and might sold for 90g), but then I would have had to spend time mucking around with AH, and not 100% sure people would buy 24 hours later (and when I did test the AH on my server I ended up with 5 mights that just did not sell, which are STILL just taking a bag slot in my inventory.) particularly if everyone was getting the raw mats and getting transmuters to cast for them rather than buying off AH, and this way I had 20g-25g profit guaranteed, just for casting and I would not be screwing someone else out of more time and mats mucking around to craft their item.
Just did 100 Transmute: Titanium and got the following results:
x1: 77
x2: 22
x3: 0
x4: 1I discovered all 12 of the Northrend Transmutation Recipies, but it took me until #88 to get the last one.
It all depends on the deal. IMHO there are 2 prices.
- Buy an alchemists's CD for truegold and expect just 1 in return
- Call for a transmutation master's CD and expect to get all
It's just important that you clearly fix the conditions before actually transmuting.

Wrong. Both Skyfire Diamond and Earthstorm Diamond Transmutes have a 23 hour cooldown, which is shared with Transmute: Primal Might.
