It does in fact help in PvP, it's a hell to tab back to the same hunter/player after they feight death. Usually you start hitting his pet before managing to change back to the hunter. It buys you a couple of seconds, enough to get a heal from your team mate. *Edit* Fine downgrade the comment, but you can't hide the truth from the public any longer now!

Forsaken Hunters deserve a better chance of not being detected... They got the smell, no pulse, and plenty of experience.
This doesn't work very well in PvP in the way that you may be thinking. It will never fool a player who has seen it used before into actually thinking you're dead. When a hostile player mouses over you, they still see the sword icon, and not the hand icon they would see if you were actually dead.
However, it will make whoever was casting against you lose their target, and stop their cast. It will also (so long as it doesn't get resisted) get Hunter and Warlock pets off your back.
