The following gems can be transmuted by an Alchemist without a cooldown. The link is to a blue post confirming what Alchemists on the PTR are experiencing. I have xmuted dozens in a row and the lack of CD is not a bug. So, expect the epic gems to come more into a reasonable line as far as prices go after a few weeks of the patch.(6/30/09) Build 10048: The 20 hour CD has been placed on epic xmutes and significant changes have been made to the materials required. The information below has been updated as of the stated build.

You have a chance to learn new transmutations when you do these transmutations as well. Nice little perk. I don't have to miss out of recipes =D
As of 5.0.4, these epic gem xmutes still have a cooldown that reset at midnight.
Tooltip
Transmute the element of shadow and a Monarch Topaz into an Ametrine.

As of patch 4.0.1, the cooldown for epic gem transmutes resets at midnight, server time, regardless of when you perform the spell. This effectively makes the CD a static 24 hours, but allows you to perform it anytime during your day.
No, it does not. This doesn't say that it grants kill credit for NPC 28701. This, and the other four transmutes grant credit toward the quest for Transmute: Cardinal Ruby, which requires that you transmute any combination of the 5 epic gems. "Kill Credit" is just a server-side script that grants you progress on your quest.
Ok PLEASE someone tell me where to find the 5 recipes I need to do this quest. I have been to every trainer I can find and none will sell me a recipe for gem transmutes !
There is a seems to be a bug in 4.01 (or maybe an intentional change to cripple alchemy), which means that the high-level transmutation recipes are currently unavailable. numerous posts on the blizzard-us forums are unanswered.
As of PTR Patch 3.2 Build 10048 the Epic Gem Transmutations have a 20 hour cooldown
Have you done the transmute specialization quests in Netherwing? I imagine that might open the transmute recipes. Edit: The other posters are right. This is a 4.0.1 bug which blizzard has yet to fix :|
I just got my druid's alch to 450 and after seeing this bug petitioned a GM. My ticket was escalated and within 48 hours I had a GM whisper me asking me to hop onto another toon while they fixed the issue for me. It took about two minutes and then when I logged back on I had the transmutes in my recipe list. Didn't even have to pay to learn them. If you need screen shots, I'll post them, but it's too annoying to post them otherwise. I'll be reposting this on the other epic gem transmutes.
hi guy's
i might be wrong but mechanics say discovery
doesn't this mean you need to "discover" the transmutation by performing other transmutations ?
or does it mean you can discover other transmutation when you perform this transmutation?
cus i'm a little confused ..grtz roggy
Transmuting any one Epic Gem will apply the 20 hour cooldown on ALL the Epic Gems. i.e. you can only transmute 1 epic gem a day.
hilariously enough, in the spell mechanics it says it grants Kill Credit for NPC 28701
Yes, I just hit 450 Alchemy and no one seems to be training the gem transmutes! an oversight by blizz?
I can't find the transmutes for training at Linzy either ... I am guessing 4.0.1 bugged or changed this.
The old school epic gem xmutes are always the most profitable xmute right before a new expansion anyway... Nobody is crafting with Truegold anymore and elementals are near worthless... Twinks.. they'll always be twinks to need epic gems.
