This transmute cannot be trained, instead it is rewarded by the quest Cardinal Ruby, which is available from the Dalaran alchemy trainer Linzy Blackbolt for all alchemist that have an Alchemy skill of 450 . The quest requires you to perform 5 of any epic gem transmutes, effectively giving other sources of epic gems a 5 day head start on Cardinal Ruby creation.

According to several members of my guild epic gem transmutations shares cooldown with titanium transmutation.
It's intriguing that, instead of attempting to remedy the superiority of red gems to the other gem colors, Blizz has elected to incorporate it into game lore...! That's ... enterprising...!

The following gems can be transmuted by an Alchemist without a cooldown. The link is to a blue post confirming what Alchemists on the PTR are experiencing. I have xmuted dozens in a row and the lack of CD is not a bug. So, expect the epic gems to come more into a reasonable line as far as prices go after a few weeks of the patch.(6/30/09) Build 10048: The 20 hour CD has been placed on epic xmutes and significant changes have been made to the materials required. The information below has been updated as of the stated build.
(8/6/08) Live Patch 3.2.0: Changed the Eye of Zul requirements to reflect the state which the patch was taken live.
Transmutable gems in 3.2.0 and the required materials:
- Cardinal Ruby: 1 Scarlet Ruby and 1 Eternal Fire instead of 3 Eye of Zul
- Majestic Zircon: 1 Sky Sapphire and 1 Eternal Air instead of 3 Sky Sapphire
- King's Amber: 1 Autumn's Glow and 1 Eternal Life instead of 1 Majestic Zircon and 2 Eternal Life
- Dreadstone: 1 Twilight Opal and 1 Eternal Shadow instead of 3 Twilight Opal
- Eye of Zul:3 Forest Emerald
- Ametrine: 1 Monarch Topaz and 1 Eternal Shadow instead of 1 Majestic Zircon and 2 Eternal Shadow
Do gem transmutes count when they're done while in a raid?
*edit* Yes. Was hotfixed to also work in raids.
Confirmed. Wasted 20 hours.
Transmute mastery can proc from this transmute.
You can get this quest at 65, the lowest level currently required to have 450 Alchemy.
As of 5.0.4, these epic gem xmutes still have a cooldown that reset at midnight.
Transmute Titanium have no longer any cooldown. But i must say the discovery proc on this transmute is rather low. I have not yet seen new discoveries by this transmute.
As of patch 4.0.1, the cooldown for epic gem transmutes resets at midnight, server time, regardless of when you perform the spell. This effectively makes the CD a static 24 hours, but allows you to perform it anytime during your day.
The recipes require 450 to be learned. Confirmed that the quest cannot be seen at 440 alchemy either.
It is one cooldown for all the gem transmutes, as previously stated. So, if you wanted to transmute an ametrine after your cardinal ruby, you would have to wait 20 hours.
No, transmutes done in a raid do not count towards quest.
As of 6.0.2 it still shares transmute cooldown with Living steel transmute :(
I've actually gotten two lucky procs in three days off these transmutes. One for 5x gems, and one for 2x gems. Shares a common cooldown with ALL northrend transmutes except the diamonds.
Its a shame that it still have a daily cooldown.
I'd say they share the same cooldown that eternals and metals do, so you'll only be able to make one epic gem every 20hrs (barring procs). The fact that a JC sitting on a mountian of ore can crap out dozens of epic gems as fast as he can click, with no cooldown on prospecting is OP, but that is nothing new to JC.
Hi.
I am lvl 71 and Transmute Master and have lvl 450 in Alchemy.
I have got the quest Cardinal Ruby, but how can I make the quest, when I dont have the other transmute recipes?
Linzy dont teach how to transmute Kings Amber, Ametrine etc, as I can read, he should do.
I have been at the alchemy trainer in Venegance Howling too, he also dont teach them.
So where do I get the transmute recipes, so I can do the quest?
Kind regards RagDolly.
I have transmute mastery. Since patch 4.0.1 hit, I have not been able to proc Transmute: Cardinal Ruby. Not once. For about a month. However, Transmute: Titanium Bar procs just fine.
Does this xmute still have and share a cooldown with other xmute CDs?
Transmute: Inferno Ruby does not share or have any cooldown, so I presume the CD has been removed for the cardinal ruby as well, however I don't wish to test it and waste my Truegold CD, so if anyone knows, please post.
As of patch 9.1.0, 14AUG21, the daily cooldown still exists.
Well they're certainly not superior to me. Eternal fires and scarlet rubies are far too expensive for me to consider transmuting this gem (compared to the profit I can make from transmuting the other epic gems). Always remember to check out the auction house frequently so you know how popular certain gems really are.
Yep. All gem, as well as research cooldowns, at the moment, are resetting at midnight server time. Perplexing.
I'm afraid to say this is not a bug, but an intended change in patch 4.0.1. I spoke to a GM today and he told me they removed the ability to learn the other epic gem transmutes with the patch. However, he told me it is still possible to get the Transmute: Cardinal Ruby through the quest. However, what the poor GM fails to remember, you can not complete the quest without having atleast one of the epic gem transmute recipes. I have made a new ticket about this and will update my post accordingly. Edit: Spoke to a 2nd GM, this time the GM gave me the untrainable transmutes... Seems the first GM
So basically it's a bug they haven't fixed because I just got 450 alchemy today and I can't find any epic gem transmute recipies
This is a bug indeed. I wrote a ticket yesterday and got the epic transmutes today, so i can finally complete the Cardinal Ruby quest. The GM didn't tell anything about fixing this issue, so i guess everyone, who has reached skill level 450 in alchemy MUST contact a GM to get the transmutes :/
This glitch appears to have been fixed. The 450 level gem transmutes were all properly available at the trainer last night.
I just finished a Truegold transmute, and figured I'd check the Cardinal Ruby recipe. It still shares a cooldown as of 4.2.
The 3 x ? item currently shown on wowhead represents 3 epic quality green gems, which are made from 3 forest emeralds.
This effectively means epic quality red gems are made from 9 blue quality green gems.
Edit: Unlike the other epic gem transmutes, this one involves a quest from the alchemy trainer to learn. The quest simply asks you to do 5 epic gem transmutes - they can be 5 of the same one, or different ones; it doesn't matter.
Who provides the quest? I spoke to the Dalaran alchemy trainer at level 80 and 439 alchemy and I was unable to get any quest. Does the quest require max rank alchemy to see?
yes requires 440 to be able to learn em. So think the quest is the same lvl.
Confirmed, lvl 80 with 449 Alchemy doesn't see quest, lvl 80 at 450 alchemy does see quest. But does anyone know what character level you need? 70, 75, 80? I have several 70+ alchies at 450, but need to know if I should get to work leveling them in time for 3.2 :D
It probably requires 2 eternals aswell. But is this a transmute with Cooldown? And does it proc when you are a Transmute master?
A quick summary of current facts.
450 Alchemy is required.
Player level is not relevant, but the level requirement for Grand Master is 65.
Transmutes for gems have no cooldown.
The mat cost for one Cardinal Ruby:3 Forest Emeralds = 1 Eye of Zul
3 Eye of Zul = 1 Cardinal Ruby(subject to change)
So only Sky Sap, Twilight Opal and Forest emeralds will be needed for the epic gems. Rest wont be needed?
Trasmute: Money!
As of todays new 3.2 PTR build...
- Epic Gems transmutations now have a 20 hours cooldown.
- Transmute: Ametrine now requires 1 x Monarch Topaz and 1 x Eternal Shadow
- Transmute: Cardinal Ruby now requires 1 x Scarlet Ruby and 1 x Eternal Fire
- Transmute: Dreadstone now requires 1 x Twilight Opal and 1 x Eternal Shadow
- Transmute: Eye of Zul now requires 3 x Eternal Life
- Transmute: King's Amber now requires 1 x Autumn's Glow and 1 x Eternal Life
- Transmute: Majestic Zircon now requires 1 x Eternal Air and 1 x Eternal Air
the proc from Transmute mastery works on this as well I hope?
Any tests?
The hotfix didn't fix it?
it's their typical sense of humor <3
I agree. They definitely shared none of that superiority. I regret even the one Cardinal Ruby made after completing the quest. It was my fault for not checking the prices, but I didn't expect it to be so worthless (in my case) after the 5 day quest to learn it.
Any1 test, do the transmute master proc on lvl lower than 80 on Transmute: Cardinal Ruby?
Well it procs on the orange gem at least. I'm still doing the cardinal ruby quest on my 68 dk.
I am a level 77 and I got transmute master to proc giving me x2 on the first day after i completed the quest.
Dude thats lucky! I've been a transmut master for 2 to 3 weeks (just chose which to go at 80) and havn't had multiples yet.
Do each transmutation share a overall cooldown?
example: If i transmuted a cardinal ruby, would i then later be able to make a Ametrine in the next 20 hours? =x
I'm having the same issue with my level 80 that just picked up Alchemy. I put in a ticket, it appears to be another bug introduced with the patch that at 450 the alchemist trainers are not teaching the other gem transmutes, at least Linzy isn't the one I checked, hopefully it gets fixed soon.
Just a question for D3viant, so would it be better for those of us who just hit 450 alchemy to contact a GM to have them give us these transmutes? Or is there any thing else that we are able to do to get them.
Quick hint, do your truegold xmute, and then look at your profession book for your Wrath gem xmutes. For me, they all share a cooldown, so if you have it different, post back.
