You can get Enchanting all the way up to 60 just by Disenchanting other items. The level of the item being DE'ed doesn't matter. At 60, no matter how many items you DE, your skill will not go up. I therefore recommend you do all your DE'ing first and then spend the dust and such when you reach 50-55 skill.

Edit: That doesn't include the Blood Elf racial bonus.

Surprisingly, many enchanters do not know how to get their dusts and essences. To obtain them, you have to disenchant any green or better item (effectively destroys it). Buying from the AH actually costs more than the destroyed item. There are many enchants, not just giving very big armour/weapon bonuses, but large glows as well. A famous one is Crusader, which, when enchanted on a weapon, procs occasionally to heal the equipper.
