Play is an ability your Fox, bird or bear(they all do different things, the bird does a loop and the bear falls asleep) learns automatically at level 20, so don't freak out if you tame one at a low level and go "oh god where is it my life is ruined." If you haven't gathered from the other comments, it makes him/her do a little dance like the shaman's ghost wolf form dance. If you walk while he's "playing" he'll slide across the ground.(as of 4.0.3)
