If you are an engineer, you are pretty much guaranteed that 1st flag at the start of every bg (Goblin Glider). As alliance, out of the gate I ran off that small ledge to the right and popped my glider.
Other than that, just play offensive and use your tricks to assault flags (e.g., as a Priest some of my best tools were Psychic Scream and Spectral Guise).
