The entrance is behind the Image of Aegwynnin the main hall (Chamber of the moon). It's very difficult to see (a dark flight of stairs leading down) and it doesn't show up on the map.
Yep, was missing the activation of the thingy after killing Desolate. Moral of the story after every boss kill look for a thingy to activate before leaving the room.
