Right back at you. The old damage formulas had a multiplier in it for your weapon's speed. Like this (Base Damage)*(Speed)=X (horribly simplified and flat wrong, but you get the idea.) In essence, slow weapons got to benefit twice, once from their high damage range and a second bonus from their slow speed, it made weapons like the Arcanite Reaper better than many epics. In order to tone this down, and make some faster weapons more viable they removed the Speed variable and "normalized" it. Slow weapons are still better for their higher damage ranges, but they don't get the bonus for their spe

MATH FOR INSTANT ATTACKS

Seems like a lot of people still don't understand.

The instant attack equation has 2 halves. The first half is the weapons damage which is somewhere near 370 for this weapon. You might notice that you hit a lot harder than 370 with a 2-hander though? How can this be? Oh yeah, attack power. Attack power is the part that got normalized to speed. So a slow weapon still has a better base damage, but what Tyyriym was talking about is that attack power no longer gets a speed mulitplier because all 2-handers are normalized to 3.3 speed.

-----------

If you have 2000 attack power (buffed) and you have a 108 DPS weapon then...

***3.2 speed - 816 damage*** - you get 471 damage from attack power and 345 from weapon damage

***3.4 speed - 838 damage*** - you get 471 damage from attack power and 367 from weapon damage

***3.6 speed - 859 damage*** - you get 471 damage from attack power and 388 from weapon damage

***3.8 speed - 881 damage*** - you get 471 damage from attack power and 410 from weapon damage

Please read and understand what is being said before commenting. Yes, normalization affected instant attacks, it did NOT change the fact that slow speed/high damage range weapons are still better for instant attacks though. The comment was aimed at the school of thought that is inclined to wrongly believe that damage range/weapon speed is no longer a factor at all in weapon choice. Was it changed? Yes, we all know it was. Did it invalidate damage range/weapon speed as an important factor for MS warriors? No.

"Slow is still better when you're talking about instant attacks, normalization did nothing to change that." That is incorrect. Instants is exactly what normalization did change, it is your autoswings that are unaffected.

Not correct at all. You show that you don't really understand what you're saying simply because you don't even mention damage. DPS isn't the first thing you have to see in a weapon, at least as an ms warrior. It's the damage range. I tried to find an example, and this is the best I've got for you. (it's a little extreme I know) http://www.wowhead.com/?item=28300 vs http://www.wowhead.com/?item=29356 which do you think benefits more a ms warrior? The polearm has indeed 12 more dps, but the increase of damage in the sword makes it much , much better for an ms warrior since he's counting on th

I just had this axe made for me and it is definitely worth it. The only thing I'm sad about is the hit to my health bar (no stamina on the weapon). Otherwise, it's golden. Slap a +70 AP enchantment on it and you're good to go.

If you're looking to compliment your Arms axe spec with a one-handed tanking axe, check out this quest line in Shadowmoon Valley: http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=10588

Go BSing and make your own weapon, you will run heroics eventually and get the nethers. The Reaper is slightly better than the tier 1 BSing weapons because of the nether requirement and the rarity of the pattern. However, after a single upgrade the BSing weapons are again better than it. The Felsteel is a several thousand gold dead end, the BS weapons will just get better, and be cheaper.

Raw materials are:
60 Fel Iron Ore and 40 Eternium Ore for the Felsteel Bars.
80 Motes of Earth, 80 Motes of Water, 80 Motes of Air, 80 Motes of Fire, 80 Motes of Mana for the Primal Might.
2 Primal Nether.

Yes, this and the other axesmith weapons make excellent hunter weapons. They don't have any stamina on them but you will get a lot of attack power out of them. If I were you I'd have a look at the Crystalforged War Axe http://www.wowhead.com/?item=31291 they tend to be cheap and have AP, Crit, and Stamina.

it makes a diference when INSTA atacks comes in the equation.. for arms warrior no mater the dps, the DAMAGE range is what its important... or a Shami.. where the only important dmg comes when you get a WF, or jsut swinging StormStrike.. no mater the weapon speed, you gona get a SS each 10 sec.. and the WF of a slower weapon can DESTROY a clothi

basically in the end it comes down to looking at the damage scale X-Y for example. And whilst your DPS rate will be the same, the potential damage from an instane is based on the X-Y + AP (which is always the same no matter speed). SO in the above equations, 3.2 = 471+345+221 = 1037potential damage 3.6 = 471+388+221= 1080potential damage (221=MS as an example, forget the exact damage at 70 since im prot atm) So whilst slow is better. Its not as crucial as it used to be when the AP multiplier was affected by weapon speed.

Currently on PTR (as of 5/17/07) the rate of exchange is 10 Badges of Honor for 1 Primal Nether. Interestingly enough, the actual blacksmithing skill tab on PTR has not been updated to reflect the change from 2 Nethers to 6. However the additional 10 Khorium Bars have been added to the required materials.

Got it last night, the mats are really not that hard to get. If you are a miner like me, you can get primal fires and earths by farming fel iron in Hellfire Penn (and, ofc the ore -> bars) and buy the rest with the money you gain by selling the fel iron and the Eternium ore of you are luck enough to get more then is needed for the axe itself.

If not, you can always farm tons of water motes on the water part of the plateau, that's of course if the opposing faction is not there and looking to pick a fight. Mana is easy enough to get in Netherstorm and the only type really tricky is air, as mote of air semes to have a slightly lower drop rate then it's water/fire/mana counterparts.

I'm a MM hunter and was looking at getting 2 Felsteel Longblades (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=23540) and a guildy whom i respect ALOT suggested that I get this instead....

considering no agi or stam on this as compared to the blades, I am concerned and unsure...I RARELY melee....so I only want the best overall stats...so melee dps doesnt really matter to me...ranged ftw :)

So which is better, this axe, or 2x the felsteel longblades..?? If one of you number crunching guru's can run the numbers...i'd greatly appreciate it!!

tyvm for your reply

2x Felsteel longblades give you... 52 agility 30 stamina and another 40 agility from enchants This axe gets you... 30 crit rating (1.36% crit on lvl 70) 112 AP and from enchants you can get either +35 agility or +70 AP Shouldn't be too hard to figure out what's best for you?

Shatter+0via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

I had this crafted for my MM hunter and I am very happy with it. The only disappointing thing about this axe is the nonexistant stamina. However, the AP you gain from this, plus the 35 agi enchant you can slap on makes it a great choice for a non BS and if you are not able to raid often.

The mats are very easy to farm, took me approximately 3 days to farm, and I bought the bars on the ah which came to around 170? gold. Not too bad imo.

IMO this is still really nice for a hunter..but hunters only get this if you do nothing (raid, pvp) and still want decent gear this is yer axe....but i had this axe from right when i was 70 ever since i went past gruul....then i got the s3 axe...if you would rather get gladiator armor instead of the axe..go for it and get this axe its quite good

Any good as an Off-hand for TG? It's wonderful +Savagery on a Hunter, and I was just wondering if it would be worth it to craft this for him, or the http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?item=23546. Same mats, it looks like.

If a Warrior with a weapon speed of 3.80, but DPS of 95 and a Warrior with a Weapon speed of 3.20 but a DPS of 105 where to nuke the same mob, the Warrior with the 3.20, 105 DPS weapon would win.

But, because the fact that Warrior's don't acctually get to hit their enemies much in 'PVP', they would prefer a slow weapon for maximum burst damage.

In PVE however, when a Warrior is constantly hitting a target, it doesn't really matter what speed the weapon is. Just what DPS the weapon has.

This axe lacks Stamina, and speed for it to be viable in a PVP situation, this is more of a PVE DPS weapon.

Really can't make up my mind if should level blacksmithing to get one of those weapons (lunar crescent, thunder etc) or this one.

I'm not planning to go prot so i won't do enough heroics to upgrade my weapon probably.

Anyone who can help me make up my mind? :)
