White (Common) quality items are handy if you want to add a "good" enchant to them. As they are not bound when used you can get the benefit of the boosted(twinked) item and when you are ready to upgrade you can hand it to another toon or sell it. It is very easy to make a twinked leveling set that can be used to boost the solo leveling potential of toons. Better stats and more DPS = quicker kills and better survivability so in turn faster leveling. Also if you have an interest in twinking toons you can make an acceptable set from whites and when you get bored, level that toon and give the items to your next new toon (normal limitations for use of course)
