Stars the Quest Chain for Quel'Delar Epic started in 3.3. Same as Quel'Serrar back in Classic WoW. You'll need to be able to complete Forge of Souls, Pit of Saron, and Halls of Reflection in order to progress and complete this Quest Line. You get to choose one of several weapons upon completing the Quest Line, each different to suit the needs of each role.

This item is a low drop rate from every NPC in the new 5-Man Dungeons The Frozen Halls. This item only drops on Heroic Mode.

Rewards that you can choose from are: Quel'Delar, Might of the Faithful Quel'Delar, Ferocity of the Scorned Quel'Delar, Cunning of the Shadows Quel'Delar, Lens of the Mind Cudgel of Furious Justice Hammer of Purified Flame Lightborn Spire

Story: Quel’Delar: The Sister Blade In ages past the great Dragon Aspects worked alongside the night elves to forge powerful prismatic blades that could be used to thwart any evil that came into the world. They would become known as the blades of Quel’Serrar. One of these blades, which had become lost in time, was recently unearthed again by brave heroes of Azeroth. Now rediscovered, Quel’Serrar is revered once more as a mighty tool of raw power. Its sister blade, however, has not been seen for many years... Quel'Delar The sword known as Quel’Delar was held by the group of kaldorei who would eventully become the high elves, and it was handed down from generation to generation. Most recently Quel’Delar was wielded by the valiant high elven warrior Thalorien Dawnseeker. Thalorien fought tirelessly in the Troll Wars to defend his beloved home of Silvermoon, the Sunwell, and all of Quel’Thalas. When the Scourge swept through the lands during the Third War, Thalorien was among the last lines of defense for the Sunwell. Despite the sword’s power, he was ultimately slain by the overwhelming might of Arthas and his legendary runeblade, Frostmourne. Quel’Delar was thought to be lost forever. Following the destruction of their homeland, the determined blood elves began to regroup and rebuild. It was during this time that the battle-hardened warrior Lana’thel stumbled upon Quel’Delar, and soon afterward the greatest opportunity to use the blade presented itself: Prince Kael’thas Sunstrider raised an army and combined forces with Illidan Stormrage, who led them north to Icecrown on a mission to destroy the Lich King. Lana’thel readily followed her prince with one thought in mind -- revenge against the Scourge -- but only tragedy awaited her. Queen of the San’layn In the icy hills of Northrend, Arthas ultimately defeated Illidan and Kael’thas, and the expedition’s few survivors were scattered across the frozen wastes. One by one the Lich King sought out those who had challenged him, and Lana’thel found herself cornered. Using Quel’Delar, she struck at him with all her might... but Frostmourne’s evil powers overwhelmed her. Through his blade, the Lich King chose Lana’thel to serve him in undeath as queen of the San’layn, a group responsible for overseeing the Scourge’s operations across Azeroth. Queen Lana’thel eagerly carried out her new duties, but every time she looked at her blade, maddening anger would swell within her as she remembered her former life. She could not afford such distractions, and with a scream that echoed throughout Icecrown, she shattered Quel’Delar and flung the fractured pieces as far as she could. Now... The champions of the Alliance and the Horde who confront the Lich King’s armies have but a slim chance of finding the pieces of this fabled blade. If they succeed, the heroes can embark on an epic adventure to re-forge Quel’Delar. They will require the strongest materials and a source of great power to make this shattered blade into the fearsome weapon it once was. Several classes can use Quel’Delar, and the sword can fit several different play styles. For any class that is unable to wield it, however, the Sunreaver blood elves and the Silver Covenant high elves will gladly take this relic of their history in exchange for a usable weapon. The search begins soon...

You actually don't need to be able to complete HoR because the quest part of it is to kill the blade at the very start, this part happens before the dungeon starts. I did it on my DK and for the HoR I got a druid friend to heal me while I beat on the blade (He's a tank) and that was it.

Heres a super useful tip for everyone. If you find yourself with the other factions version of this by whatever means, if get it onto the other factions side (through neutral AH), simply mail it to another character on your account from the same faction and it will turn it to the other factions version.

This is a rare drop from the new Icecrown 5-man dungeons on heroic difficulty. It is not party loot, so if it drops, only one person in your group can get it.

Good luck.

The weird thing about the quest chain, is that you go to Pit of Saron -> Forge of Souls -> Halls of Reflection, but the progression order for the new Icecrown dungeons is Forge of Souls -> Pit of Saron -> Halls of Reflection.

I suppose most people would have completed all three of them before getting the item to start this quest chain though.

Benegesserit-2via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

Yay for loot drama. When rare loot like this drop, sure, people agree on loot rules before the run but then flip out as if everyone else in the party is a child-raping victimizer and scream until they get it, or report you if they don't. Pray you don't actually get these instances if you're pugging random instances with the new tool.

Yewb+6via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

Well, even if you finish the Forge of Souls for the first time and get the hilt that run, you've still unlocked the Pit of Saron, so you can finish PoS on your quest run and unlock HoR. Still, it does seem a backwards way to do it.

Note. This drops off ANY mob in ANY of the NEW 5 man icecrown dungeons. Not just off the bosses. Its unknown if the hilt will drop in normal, but heroic mode drops have been confirmed. If the hilt only drops off heroic, in theory you could gather a few friends together, farm the trash mobs in the start of one of the instances and then just reset the instance, since you dont get saved until one of the bosses dies. Apparently it is not BoP, which may mean some people will sell the hilt instead of using it. Although it'd be wise to have those who would USE the hilt roll, instead of those who arent and are just going to sell it on the AH for easy gold. May be changed to BoP once 3.3. hits live though.

Using the drop counts here on wowhead, which keeping in mind are just a random sample, I devised a simple probability scale for these Forge of Souls "half runs". 6 Soulguard Watchman (0.088%) - 0.531% 5 Soulguard Adept (0.074%) - 0.368% 6 Soulguard Reaper (0.061%) - 0.364% 5 Soulguard Bonecaster (0.064%) - 0.321% 6 Soulguard Animator (0.065%) - 0.389% 3 Soul Horror (0.062%) - 0.185% 31 Total (2.157%) So, theoretically, if you kill all 31 mobs before Bronjahm, there is a 2.157% chance that it will dro

However, for sufficiently small values of A, the following approximation holds: 1-(1-A)^N ≈ A*N Thus, his numbers weren't too far off. With his data, we get: 1-((1-.00088)^6(1-.00074)^5(1-.00061)^6(1-.00064)^5(1-.00065)^6(1-.00062)^2) = 2.138% ≈ 2.157%

The quest starting item has a chance of dropping from any of the 3 ICC Heroic (and ONLY Heroic) dungeon wings. Update 1: As of 12/10/09, the drop rate of the Battered Hilt was lowered in the ICC 5 man Heroics. Source :-( It is now an very rare drop from the ICC Heroics Update 2: As of 12/16/2009, the drop rate of the Battered Hilt was increased very slightly due to Blizz feeling they nerfed it too much. However... the Hilt can no longer drop from the non elite skeletons in Pit of Saron anymore (Blizz apparently didnt like people farming them for the Hilt) Source It is still a really rare drop from the ICC Heroics

[s]Just picked this up from the Heroic Pit of Saron. The entire area before the first boss can be 2 manned, and the little nonelite skeletons DO DROP the Hilt as well. I would highly, highly recommend farming it there.[/s]

Blizzard has just released a hotfix that increases the droprate of this item from all Heroic ICC instances, but has removed the chance of it dropping from the nonelite skeletons in Heroic Pit of Saron.

I've had a few problems solo'ing the groups as a prot pally. Only reliable and time effective way is to pull skele's back, kill them, zone out to avoid caster with 300k hp, and get next group. I can kill the casters but they take so long -.- I'd recommend finding at least a shadow priest or other DPS hybrid to farm with you, and agree to go until 2 hilts drop.

One dropped either from Marwyn in Halls of Reflection or his preceding waves of trash because when the tank looted him it appeared at the same time as the rest of his loot. Also I tend to believe the 1% or less drop rate after running all 3 instances twice now it's only dropped once.

How to get your Quel'delar

There is no magic way of getting this item, there's no secret password that makes it instantly drop. Though there are ways for you to up your chances in getting it.

The armory lists the Battered Hilt to have an "Extremely Low (1% - 2%)" drop chance. This is from all mobs on heroic difficulty in Forge of Souls, Pit of Saron and Halls of Reflection. This includes the 10 waves of mobs during the first encounter in Halls of Reflection.

So the way we are going to up our chances in acquiring the Battered Hilt is, simply to, wipe countless times on Falric. Failing to complete the encounter with Falric will lead to the whole encounter resetting. Thus you have to fight the first 5 waves once more, and as i mentioned earlier theese 5 waves have a chance of dropping the Battered Hilt. Each wave consists of 3-5 mobs, and a total of 15 mobs for the first 5 waves.

There are 4 possible scenarios to this tactic, a nightmare scenario, two realistic scenarios and ofcourse a dream scenario.

[ul] [li]Nightmare scenario - You never get it, simple as that.[/li] [li]Realistic scenario A - 1% drop chance which means you'd have to kill 688 mobs for a 99.99% certainty of a drop. This would theoritically mean that you have to wipe and re-do the encounter 46 times per drop. Which totals up to 230 wipes if your whole party wants the hilt.[/li] [li]Realistic scenario B - 2% drop chance which means you'd have to kill 344 mobs for a 99.99% certainty of a drop. This would theoritically mean that you have to wipe and re-do the encounter 23 times per drop. Which totals up to 115 wipes if your whole party wants the hilt.[/li] [li]Dream scenario - You all get it on the first clear.[/li] [/ul]

So the best way to acquire/farm for the Battered Hilt is simply to wipe over and over again on Falric allowing you to clear the first 5 waves of mobs again. Now ofcourse this is going to cost you some money in repair bills, but it's a ton cheaper than buying one off the AH for up to 20,000 gold (yes i've seen them go for that much).

Good luck in finding your Battered Hilt, i have yet to find mine!

P.S. I never ever in here say that any of the scenarios is a gauranteed drop. I've accounted for the different type of scenarios and presented the amount of kills/wipes you would need in order to get a 99.99% certainty of a drop, 99.99% is not 100% Edit: Don't do math when you're tired. - Thanks Ciar for noticing.

nyalria+27via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

No. Wrong, Ydos. He or she is not saying on 688 it's 99% chance of dropping. He's saying that there's 99% chance that one of those mobs will have dropped it by then. Think of it this way. Roll 100 different dice at the same time. What's the chance that NO dice at all will be a one? 5/6? Not even close. More like 5/6 to the power of 100, or somewhere around 0.0000000121%. There is a 99.9999988% chance one of those dice will have one pip on it. If that doesn't sound reasonable to you, I'm sorry, but I can't help you. Apply the same thing to skeletons. AE 688 skeletons, or kill them 5 at

Thoke+4via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

Actually henrymccarty is right. You have take into account all the possibilities. In the case of two mobs, they're are the following. The 0.01 x 0.01 = 0.0001 is the probability that the Hilt will drop on both mobs. The probability that it drops from either first or the second mob is (0.99 x 0.01)+(0.01 x 0.99) = 0.0198. Now if we add all these together 0.9801 + 0.0001 + 0.0198 = 1, we get the 1 we were looking for. It's usually most effective to calculate the probability that at least one Battered Hilt drops. That we can get from the formula 1-0.99^n, where n is the number of

During the questline you have to visit Forge of Souls, Pit of Saron and Halls of Reflection to collect infused saronite among other stuff so keep in mind that you will need help to finish the questline. That being said, it does not have to be heroic mode in order to complete the above mentioned. As of 10/12-2009 droprate has been lowered from 6-8% to 1-2%.

496141+2via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

The armory shows "Extremely Low 1%-2%" for drop rates below 1%. Just from my sample I got 3 epics in 750 trash kills so I'd say the drop rate for epics is now 0.1%-0.5% (around 1 in 1000). Assuming they just nerfed all drop rates and didn't specifically adjust the hilt drop it should have the same drop rate as the other epics.

blizzard REALLY dropped the ball, by making this not Bind on Pickup. as it is getting this to drop is EXTREMELY RARE, it won't be seen very often, but then when it does drops, everyone in the party regardless if they did the quest or not, will roll need on it, and ninja it for the quick money. it's just not fair, that players who have already completed the quest can still roll for this, thus denying other players their chance to get the weapon, just because they are greedy enough to roll need for sells. blizz really has to fix this problem, the ideal solution would be to first make it Bind on Pickup, and also, once u've completed the quest-chain be unable to loot the item ever again. otherwise, this is gonna become another "Tankard'o terror", wich on my realm, everyone rolled need on it, even mages or priests, why? because since it didn't bind on pickup, tthey wanted easy cash. this ruins server economy and makes ninjas more motivated to farm these heroics to steal others from the chance to experience what is an amazing quest-chain. seriously blizz, fix this............

NemoUtopia+35via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

They can fix this by making any character that has in their log or has completed ANY of the battered hilt chain quests unable to 'see' the drop, not qualifying for it. They've shown plenty of ability to phase loot by profession, race, etc., so why not this?

Pinochet+3via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

This still leaves anyone with 251+ gear free to skip the questline and roll on every hilt that drops, at the expense of non-raiders who benefit more from access to an even distribution of the hilt. I think BoP is the way to go.

128072+16via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

They could make people to be able to roll "need"on first time and if you win it, you can only roll "greed" every next time you see it drop. So people that really need it can roll amongst themselves, and greedy bastards can roll greed and still win it if everyone in party already had it. Everyone WINS. Except for greedy bastards.

Glitzero+2via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

Runkkor it is truth what you are saying, but imagine that someone is simply unlucky and could not have dropped this item for years of going through the dungeons. When this situation appears he can just buy that in auction for some money...

i wish people would stop saying its a waste of money for X amount for some people with 60k gold stashed away rotting, maybe it is worth 10k so they don't have to bother running the instance 30 times like i have been trying to get this. for others such as myself who never go above 3k gold, it wouldn't be worth that much to buy it. an item is worth whatever the buyer is willing to pay for it

Izithel+4via Wowhead (opens the original comment in a new tab)

Even now, 5 years later I'd say it's worth getting for that amount of money. Sure it's not the cheapest skin but it's unique and very beautiful. If you got the spare gold, do it, don't torture yourself farming it.

3 Dropped for my group when we first entered, I won the first one. Rushed here to see what it was and noticed it wasn't BoP but I still passed for others, as it's just not nice if you get one and start taking other ones and not letting other people enjoy the quest and very nice weapon. They are in my servers AH for 14k atm but honestly I can see it selling for no more than 2-3k at most.
