On the PTR, completion of The Darkmoon Faire wasn't required, just having the Adventurer's Guide. Which is good, because the NPC that gives the prequest, as of now, is bugged in Orgrimmar.

Can confirm as a dungeon drop. [item=71637] dropped from Archbishop Benedictus in Hour of Twilight, as well as [item=71638] from Asira Dawnslayer in the same run. As far as I can tell, drop rates aren't 100% considering I had done an End Time instance with no drop beforehand, but it does seem consistent that you have to defeat similarly levelled bosses for these items...and be lucky with your rolls.

Don't forget your towel and your Hitchhiker's Guid- I mean, [item=71634]! =)

Please disregard this comment. As you can see from the patch number, he's referring to something on PTR, and therefore something we can't use necessarily. Also note that as of the time of my reply, the first new Darkmoon Faire has only just begun. We all have to wait a week from now before anybody can comment on the functionality outside of the Darkmoon Faire time frame.

Please keep in mind that the quest is not repeatable during one DMF festival. After you complete the quest you cannot get it for the second time, as it states when you use an item for the second time "You have already completed this quest". Strangely enough, this grimoire just dropped for me (85 Pally) off Exarch Maladaar while farming Auchenai Crypts normal for an item. So either I got lucky and slipped/glitched through a hole in the maze, or there's still a tiny chance for it to drop off lower-level dungeons when you've outlevelled them. :)

trial twinks can also get the Ornate Weapon - stockades, and Imbued Crystal from BFD. You just have to queue for them specifically as the 'random dungeon' only gives wailing caverns and SFK

Soothsayer's Runes gives x15 while A Treatise on Strategy gives x10, just turned both in right now

Scarlet Monastery seems to be a good place to farm the Mysterious Grimoire. Both Arcanist Doan in the library and Bloodmage Thalnos in the graveyard drop the item. I often just cycle through the four dungeons (graveyard, cathedral, armory, and library) when farming. What makes this strategy even more worthwhile is that bosses in each of the four areas drop a Darkmoon artifact. You can get the Ornate Weapon from Herod in the armory and the Imbued Crystal from High Inquisitor Whitemane in the cathedral. I solo all four dungeons, reset the instances, and repeat.

I second this, the fact that all four wings of SM are classed as a single instance mean you can have 10 attempts at this drop an hour, rather than the 5 in ZF.

^ The 5 instances count for zoning in/out. So if you leave one and enter another one, that counts as one of your 5 instances per hour.

@dlbert2000: As of [url=http://us.battle.net/wow/en/blog/13021019/547-hotfixes-april-14-4-14-2014]patch 5.4.7[/url] it's now 10 instances per hour.

As of the second Darkmoon Faire (Jan 1st), we are [b]unable to farm the Darkmoon Dungeon quest items from low level instances[/b] so as a level 85, with this change/bugfix in mind, here's a compiled list of all the info you need to know for level [b]85[/b] characters; if you are lower than level 85, other instances may be a better choice for you and more information may be found in other comments.

Firstly, to get any of these items to drop, you will need the [item=71634] obtained from the introductory quest "The Darkmoon Faire" [url=http://www.wowhead.com/quest=7926]H[/url] [url=http://www.wowhead.com/quest=7905]A[/url] which is located in Orgrimmar and Stormwind, respectively, or pick it up from [npc=10445], who stands at the left-side of the entrance to Darkmoon Faire. You can only get the [item=71634] [b]during[/b] the Faire but all the quest items can [b]always[/b] drop, regardless of the Faire being on or not. The drop chance is quite low, roughly [b]15%[/b] and everyone who has the guide will be able to roll greed but not need.

Secondly, all of the items are BoE so can be traded with other players if you can't manage to pick up every item before the Faire ends or want to pocket some cash/give to a friend (These can be thrown in gift wrapping). Incidentally, all of the quest items can be handed in [b]once per month[/b] (they're consumed when you hand it in), so you might want to stock these up if you're having lucky drops - sometimes you can get really unlucky and not get anything for a while!

Most importantly, the rewards: You can either sell them for a fair amount of gold to another player as these are quite desirable or hand them in for 250 DMF rep, some gold and varying amounts of tickets.[item=71635],[item=71636],[item=71637] and [item=71638] give 10 tickets each, and can drop from any dungeon level 76-85 (for level 85s). [item=71715] gives 15 tickets but only drops from level 85 heroics. Together, these 5 give you [achievement=6027]. [item=71952], [item=71951] and [item=71953] give 5 tickets each and are obtained from looting the insignias of enemies in Battlegrounds. Together, these three give [url=wowhead.com/achievement=6028]Darkmoon Defender[/url]. [item=71716] gives 10 tickets and drops from certain level 85 raid bosses. All together, these give [achievement=6029], 2250 DMF rep and 80 tickets.

Dropped today from [npc=18373] in [zone=3790] normal. I'm lvl 85. Maybe they forgot to "fix" the BC dungeons?

Updated for mop and it looks like there are no drops in [zone=5918]. According to the wowhead, [item=71715] drops in heroic mode, and the other items drop in normal modes off the respective boss. I.e.: [item=71638] drops in normal and not heroic.

I've compiled a easy to see table of where each item for [achievement=6027] can be found to get the most bang for your regular/heroic dungeon queues since Blizzard "fixed" the drops so that [faction=909] monthly quest items can only be looted in level appropriate dungeons. This is ordered in alphabetical order, with the instances that drops the most items for DMF items towards the top.

Notes: I'm keeping the level 80 and 85 data for people who have not upgraded from the Battlechest and Cata to MoP. If you find that a boss drops something not listed here. Leave a reply and I'll add it in, eventually.

Great effort and good organization, but at least in the case of Ahn'Kahet I can attest this info is inaccurate as of 4 April 2012

@Quaaid: Can you elaborate on what is wrong exactly? Remember, there is a CHANCE of drop, and you need your book. So proving that what he listed will not drop the item is pretty hard, but if you had another item drop in addition to what he listed, let us all know.

Got a Treatise on Strategy from Commander Ri'mok (Heroic) today when doing randoms.

I don't follow this, you say the grimoire doesn't drop in heroic mode, but scholomace doesn't have a normal mode for pandaria

@gorybobcat. Wrong. Scholomance, and all dungeons, can be done in normal mode whenever you like. You can go to the door of the dungeon and go in, or do it by dungeon finder at the proper level. Don´t expect to do it by finder when you reach 90. I have done it today with an alt level 43, and I got the grimoire. In fact, I was the only one who saw it, because I was the only one who had the DMF book in my bag

I am not sure if this is mentioned, but if you looking for making gold with this and similar items and if AH prices are below 16 gold (or depending on which item you looking), it is best to give this to your alts. Since quest awards gold, but you can only submit one. For example on my server, the PvP artifacts go only for 2g, but the quest awards 16g 54s at level 85.

While these items do not drop for players of inappropriate level anymore, they easily can be farmed with low level friend you can trust. Just quickly kill everything for him and let him loot bosses. Darkmoon items will drop from bosses now and while you can't loot them, your friend can! Since these items are BOE, he can just give them to you after looting.

Could someone confirm if you can get this item from [npc=54938] at level 90? I tried 71 times already and I didn't see it. However I got 10 [item=71638] from [npc=54968] so it makes me think that it's possible to get it with this lvl but I'm very unlucky.

Edit: I will keep editing the numbers. With 71 deads and no loot, at least I can say his drop cannot be 12%. Edit2: After 140 deads I decided to give up and buy it in the auction house. I don't think I can be so unlucky, so I think that probably he doesn't drop it at level 90.

This macro no longer works as of 9.0 (Shadowlands release). Check the macro by Erlik down below (or above it if gets upvoted above this one).

As of 6.2 this and the other boss-dropping Darkmoon quest items have a chance to drop from any appropriate-level dungeon or raid boss and some higher-level trash as personal loot instead of group loot from specific bosses as they did previously.

I got one of these from [npc=81396] when opening the Garrison Mine on an alt, so it seems there's at least one non-dungeon mob out there which can drop these now.

Easiest way. XP cap a toon at level 20 and farm Stockade. If you dual box (same server) or have a guildee run you even better. You can only have one in your bags at a time on your level 20.

Yes, I just got 1 on a level 110 character. Cannot remember what I was doing but needless to say they still drop for high level characters.
