Greens and browns

Mix greens (food scraps, grass) with browns (dry leaves, cardboard) at roughly one to two parts brown per green, and keep it damp as a wrung-out sponge.

Tend it

Turn the pile when it slows, and judge heat by hand: warm means working. Chop inputs small; surface area is speed.

Two bins, or worms

Run a two-bin system and screen finished compost for seed starting, or keep worms under the sink if space is the constraint. Finished compost smells like forest floor.
