It should also be noted that Cone of Cold is one of the few spells with a good mana to damage ratio [compared to Arcane Explosion, for example] that cannot be spell reflected by a warrior. Therefore it's great for when you see a warrior with a shield out.

If you have any issues casting Cone of Cold during Children's Week:

Once a [item=69027] has been placed into your inventory, your Cone of Cold macros may fail as they are attempting to use the item instead of the spell of the same name. We have similar issues with Frozen Orb and [spell=84714]. The solution is to add parentheses at the end of the spell name. This is similar to the syntax used when we used to be able to select the rank of a spell to use. So, the correct macro is:

/use Cone of Cold()

Note: /cast and /use are synonymous.

Cone of Cold is a Mage's best friend in group PvP and solo PvP. In group PvP, Cone of Cold is best used immediately after using Frost Nova on a group of closely packed enemies, freezing them in place. If the proper talent points have been spent in the Frost tree, then Cone of Cold will more than likely critical strike the frozen enemies it touches.

In solo PvP, Cone of Cold is best used if your enemy gets too close to you, and you need to escape. Pop Cone of Cold on them, get some distance, and start throwing some Frostbolts! Using the Frost Nova>Cone of Cold technique is not optimal, since Frostbolt will do much more damage to a frozen enemy than Cone of Cold will.
