The gem pattern learned has the same color as the gem you just spend. If you already know all the patterns of this color, an other random MoP-rare gem pattern is taught to you.

Once you learn all the rare-quality pandaria gem cuts, you can continue to do this but will no longer learn a new recipe. Essentially wasting 1 rare gem and getting 2 other cuts you may not want.
