Once a day, you can also learn a pattern with a cheaper way, spending 3 uncut gems of the color you want.

The gem pattern learned has the same color as the gem you just spend. If you already know all the patterns of this color, an other random MoP-rare gem pattern is taught to you.

Perhaps it's just a coincidence, but I just learned 4 Primordial Ruby designs in a row using this. Noticed I have more rubies than any other gem in my inventory, so maybe that has something to do with it. Then again, coincidence..

There are two ways to discover rare gem cuts in MoP:

1. 
   
2. Spend three rare gems of the same color to learn a random gem cut for that color. This has a shared one day cooldown (resets at midnight), meaning that you can learn one new cut per day. If you know all the cuts for that color, you learn a random cut of another color.
   
3. Spend three Spirit of Harmony to learn a random cut of any color. This has no cooldown.
   

So basically this lets you bypass the cooldown in order to learn gem cuts slightly faster. Do note however that Spirits of Harmony are bind on pickup, and that there are other things to spend them on. They're also used to create the Jade Owl and Sapphire Cub non-combat pets, which are not soulbound, meaning that you can probably sell those pets for quite a bit of money. Especially early on, when no one has them yet and a lot of people are spending their SoHs on research.
