Maybe if you checked, you would see that the plate gear you can make with these is second best in slot for some plate classes, only being bested by the Tier pieces themselves. Additionally, if you're doing Normal progression and farming LFR/Flex, you get a ton of Spirits. My guild currently has 14 on hand after crafting five pieces of cloth armor for our mage and priest. They HAVE made these pieces not only viable, but desirable and attainable.
