Edit: I was talking about smelting tin on its own being useless. Yes, smelting Bronze uses Tin and gets your level up pretty well, but you can't get many skillups with Tin alone.

Useless for levelling, yes, but the tin is needed for smelting bronze which gets your skill up for a while, so still handy.
This trainer no longer seems to be training any of the classic mining. He only offers smelting for Cataclysm. Same with the miners by the JC trainer in Org, in Durotar, and in TB. There's no option to learn smelt Tin etc anymore.
