It's not 100 yard range, it's melee range.
the 100yrd range is due to the fact that this is the talent from the Feral talent tree, most talents have this range, since it is considered the range of vision

But what happens if you're having an out-of-body experience?
It seems (based on WoD notes) that in WoD mangle will be bear only skill.
Wondering why this isn't working in cat form no matter what you do, no matter what you try? Shred is no longer a backstab, it has completely replaced mangle, as well as acting as ravage. Pounce has been baked into rake, so no more double dots before Rip.
Mangle is no longer for kitties, bears only. Use shred.
The tooltip is the way it's listed in the spellbook when you aren't in either form. Here are the Wowhead pages for the versions when you are in one of those forms: Bear: [spell=33878]; Cat: [spell=33876]. Although I recall seeing "Mangle (Bear)" and "Mangle (Cat)" somewhere, all three versions all just called "Mangle" now. The version of the spell changes depending on what form you are in.
It says 100 yard range because that is the max range you can be from yourself when you learn the talent. The talent has 100 yard range, not the spell.
Even in the wowhead 6.1 patch notes, it still shows (incorrectly) that mangle is a feral ability as well (when mouse-hovering over it). It is only for bears (guardians).
