The discount is now based off Stormwind/Orgrimmar reputation and no longer off of Honor Hold/Thrallmar reputation.

The Thrallmar and Honor Hold trainer do now get discounts not from their respective faction but with Orgrimmar and Stormwind as said in the wall of text over all these mysterious comments.

The Nether Drake is 280%, its the Swift Nether Drake (or Armored) that is 310% wich is pvp reward for the top 5 or 10 teams.

Hopefully the high price will remind you which mount to click on.
I can't count how many times I have accidentally clicked on my ground mount, and then hastily leap off a cliff, only to find my mount has no wings and I plummet to my death.

If you're worried about the high cost of this mount, don't worry. I had approximately 3,000 gold saved up before TBC, leaving only 3,200 more gold to ride an epic mount in the Outlands (5000 Artisan + 1000 Expert + 200 mount). Since TBC came out, I've been able to get as much as 2,500 gold from quests, selling quest rewards and world drops, and almost no grinding / farming. Mats are horridly overpriced on the AH, so pick up mining/herbalism/skinning and list your junk! Good luck.

Can't do Netherwing dailies with no epic mount

This is a common fallacy. As long as you have artisan riding, you can do netherwing dailies just fine. I know this because I never bought an epic flyer myself... just the training, then ground up to exalted with Netherwing for my drake. This is a savings of 100g (before rep discount) and while you're on Netherwing ledge, the disguise you get buffs your speed to match normal epic mount speed anyhow. [EDIT: changed wording for a little more clarity.]

For those who are endlessly saving up for their epic flying mount without any result, try this.

As of patch 2.4 there are daily quests available both on the Isle of Quel'Danas and in Outland. Start by doing the outland daily quests, these will reward you with money and Shattered Sun Supply bags. These bags will ALWAYS contain an uncommon item. Save these uncommon items until you have about 10-15 of them and let an enchanter disenchant them. DO NOT VENDOR THEM!

While doing the outland daily quests (the SSO ones) try to farm some primals. When I'm doing the quests at the Throne of Kil'jaeden I try to get at least 3 Primal Fires. When I'm doing the quest at Oshu'Gun, I'm farming at least one Primal Shadow. When doing the quest in Blade's Edge, I farm at least one Primal Mana. When you've done all these quests, go to Silvermoon or Ironforge, find an enchanter to Disenchant your greenies, put the dusts, essences and primals on the auction house and fly to the Isle of Quel'Danas.

Do all your daily quests there, try to get a Primal Mana from the sentries and then return to a city! You can easily earn hundreds of golds using this method.

Use your spare time by doing the Skyguard and Ogri'la daily quests or farm more primals and you'll have your mount in no time.

Yes, with the goblin racial, this costs the same as exalted (4000g)

if you follow Click's advice and take gathering professions, the grind can easily fly by quickly...if you are like many casters and have Tailoring/Enchanting and didn't get in on the initial 'zomg 18 slot bags!' that went down in early BC then you are going to feel the crunch to get there. that said leveling a draenei shaman (read: not pre-BC toon) I managed to get over 400g just questing in Hellfire, and I know for a fact that my warlock main on another server can easily pull 10-15g doing crap quests at level 70 (and its relatively easy to have entire zones of those to do) in short its not

Though that does not count the terrain (like hills/mountains) you might fly over with your flying mount and have to go around if on your ground mount.

Check your reputations before buying artisan riding. You may end up paying up to 1000g too much if you buy it from the wrong trainer. Buying it in Dalaran would have cost me 5000g but I went to Thrallmar and payed 4250g at honored. I saved 750g for 5 minutes of travel time. BTW, I think nearmellomt's discount numbers are incorrect because as I said, at honored I only payed 4250g.

Nether Drakes are also rewarded free from becoming exalted with the Netherwing. Right after you become exalted just talk to one of the Nether Drakes in Shattrah the they will become your mount.

If you were a druid and could instantly shift into flight form in mid air, this wouldn't be a problem. I can't think how many times I was saved by that fact.

Im not sure why people are downrating jimbob2834's comment. Its absolutely correct, while the information in the post above it is oudated. The vendors in Thrallmar and Honor Hold base their rep discounts off of your Orgrimmar rep or Stormwind rep respectively. They do NOT give a discount based on your Thrallmar or Honor Hold rep as they did previously.

You will need 5000 gold (5200 gold if your buying this and the mount at the same time), Artisan Riding skill is required for the Swift Windriders, Swift Gryphons, Netherdrakes, Ashes's of A'lar (i.e. phoenix mount), the holiday item Swift Flying Broom and the patch 2.3 mounts which are the Hippogrpyhs and the Epic Engineer mount which is called the Turbo-Charged Flying Machine Control. It will say after the name of the item Requires Riding (300). You will also need this skill to start the dailies with the Netherwing.

as of aug 31st, the price of training seems to be set at 4000g even with exalted and bartering.
unknown if this is a bug or an unannounced change, will update once I contact a GM.
Update - contacted GM, his response : It appears that this was changed in 4.2.2, that the guild perk Bartering does not apply to this purchase. We are unsure if this was an intended change or a bug.

there will be a heirloom book, 1000g, account bound, allows cold weather flying from 68.

Be sure to take in to consideration that a player with gathering professions will benefit more from the speed increase of your new epic flyer. If your main character is an enchanter/tailor, consider getting the epic flyer for your altlernate character that has gathering professions first. Getting your second epic flyer will come much sooner.

hehe. Aaaactually... It wouldn't matter at all. Your initial angular velocity will be the same no matter which way you choose to fly, and your acceleration either east or west will just change your velocity relative to your initial angular velocity.

If you don't have CWF and still would like to fly {somewhat} in Northrend, you can visit "Honest" Max (@ K3) and recieve a "Loaned Gryphon Reins" (if you are Alliance) or "Loaned Wind Rider Reins" (if you are Horde) for FREE! You need to be 77 and CWF skill free. It has it's catches, however, it helps if you are still saving up for that 1000g blow to the head. 8D

lol, i don't know anyone who mounts up and jumps off a cliff to fly, i just press space bar and save the leg work... but i wish i could watch someone do that, it would be hilarious!

Didn't see it mentioned before, so i thought I'd add that there IS a trainer in Sholazar Basin. Near the lake towards the center, i forget what it is called.

P.S. Being a tailor is probably one of the most profitable professions on my server, at least, since they can make frostweave bags. Same with mechano hogs for engineers. Hope this will help someone trying to desperately earn money like me =)

In case anyone doesn't already know, you can get Cold Weather Riding before you have to pay the 5000 for Artisan riding. That comes in handy if you don't have the 5000 when you hit 77. ;)

You will get this skill if you boost a character to level 90.

this information needs updating... the Honor Hold trainer now uses capital city rep to determine discount.

The Thrallmar and Honor Hold flying trainers are the only ones which apply a capital city discount. As stated in the top section, "Trainers located in Warsong Hold or Valiance Keep in Borean Tundra, will use Warsong Offensive or Valiance Expedition reputation to apply discount to training cost."

And don't forget that you'll need artisan riding skill to start the cain quest for Swift Flight form or, now in WotLK, you need it to buy the skill from the trainer.

there are no repeatable quests to get neutral with netherwing. You just do the quest chain and that puts you at neutral with the netherwing faction and the guy tells you that you need to be a more accomplished flyer or something before he will give you more quests.

Like browne166, I couldn't find a trainer to learn Artisan riding from, which was really confusing to me because I hit 80 and was eligible to learn Master riding (if you're wondering why I didn't learn Artisan sooner, I dungeoned my way up to 80, so I never had a need to fly around). I never had this problem on any other toons I have. I submitted a ticket and I received this response:

I've looked at your issue and I truly feel that our best option at this point is to Reset your User Interface. The reason for this is that in Stormwind I currently see you are able to learn Artisan Riding from Bralla Cloudwing. <(^-^)>

Many complications arise, and manifest in strange ways in game, when your game files are corrupted or damaged - the following reset will repair any such issue that may be preventing clear, accurate and timely communication between your game client and our game servers.

The "User Interface Reset" is a simple operation that rids your PC of any possibly corrupted game files and replaces them with shiny new ones to make SURE your game is functioning as optimally as possible The user interface reset helps in almost every case, and it's a good step to try while we are addressing any possible issues on this end for you.

1) Exit the World of Warcraft to your desktop by logging out of the game and exiting.
2) If you used an "installer" for a custom UI, see if it has an "uninstaller" and use it.
3) Inside the World of Warcraft Program Folder, rename the "WTF," "Cache," and "Interface" folders to "WTF-Old," "Cache-Old," and "Interface-Old."
4) Restart your computer.
5) Make sure that you are using WOW.EXE or LAUNCHER.EXE to start the game. Please do not run any UI installers beforehand, as we want to eliminate them as part of the issue.
6) Upon launching the game, you should see the Intro cinematic movie and be prompted to agree to the Terms of Use. Once you authenticate past the login screen, the "AddOns" button should no longer be visible at the lower left corner of the character selection screen. Both points mentioned previously must hold true if you should complete the aforementioned steps correctly.

Note: Please note that upon completion of these steps, all in-game user settings will be reset to default value, and all customized macros will be removed.

I followed the instructions twice because all I kept seeing was Master every time I logged in. I don't use a custom UI and was ready to respond that this wasn't my problem. I glanced at the filter at the trainer and even though I don't use it much, I decided to check it. For some reason, I had only Unavailable checked off, which is why it only showed Master riding; it was unavailable to me because I needed to learn Artisan first. I checked off Available and voila! Artisan now shows up. I rarely use the filter, so I was a little confused as to why it set like that. However, I remembered I was playing around with it while on another toon at a different trainer a couple days ago. I didn't think it was affected by other toons, so I didn't even consider it, but it seems that it may.

So if the UI problem isn't your issue, be sure to check your filter at the trainer and make sure Available is unchecked.

Wrong, it's based on either Honor Hold/Thrallmar rep or Stormwind/Orgrimmar rep, whichever is higher at the time.

You can make more than enough money by taking a gathering skill and putting mats in the AH. I just bought my 280% flying skill at 72, on a brand new character with zero help. Even old world ore can sell for quite a bit, and with increased spawn rates it adds up fast. No one mines in TBC anymore, so a few people powering up BSing or JCing will buy out all your ore at any price since no one really sells it. A few blues for 40-50g here and there and it adds up. At any rate, super speed flying is a luxury, not a right. It's not given to you. At worst you can get it well before 80 from just questi

Money shouldn't be a problem.
If you do all quests in every area and also grind some, for example farm motes, then you should be 70 by the time you complete the quests in Blades edge.

By playing this way you have Netherstorm and Shadowmoon left at 70 and the rewards for 250-300 quests will be money, thousands of gold.
The quests there will also be easier since you're a few levels higher than the average player.

I left Blade's edge when i turned 69, but i had many quests left there. I also left quests unsolved in most of the previous areas.
I have grinded through a total of about 1-1½ level since i came to outland.

Not the fastest way to get to 70, but you make more money afterwards so you can buy this riding skill earlier.

as of 4.3.2, Flying speed scales towards your Riding skill, instead of your mount.

I can confirm that exalted status with Stormwind will get you artisan flight for 4000g at Honor Hold.

I find it kind of strange (but deal with it) that artisan riding is 4000g, there is no possible way to make 4000g before you hit level 70 just by questing, even with the helm/shoulders/staff/cloak/chest and 2 trinkets allowing me to sell tons of quest rewards, I've only netted the cost of training all spells on my priest up to 70, 4 needed glyphs, expert/cold weather and flight masters license (needed to send myself 40g for that when I was able to train it) and currently sit on 391g on this character

Master riding should be the luxury here not artisan but I always end up dropping the gold on both anyway

I was wondering why my trainer didn't seem to show the next level of riding.

Be sure to check 'filter - available'. The default seems to be 'filter - show nothing at all.'

I was able to learn Journeyman, Expert and flight-masters in 10 seconds, after I realised that they weren't showing up.

So, if you get the quest 'I believe I can fly', the person you speak to to hand in WILL be the right person to learn flying, you just have to make sure they are displaying the correct list.

mind you it also matters whether you had rested exp or not - I only had it for about 3 full levels in total from 60-70 and I had to leave Blades edge at lvl 68, with all prior quests completed (no dungeoning in outlands), and no grinding (don't think I've ever grinded since starting my character, which is the way Blizzard made it to be). My friend who wasn’t ever off rested exp managed to get to 70 right in Blades Edge. I only managed to buy an epic land mount at lvl 64 (I started when BC came out) with about 20g to spare for skills, but by the time I got to 70 I managed to get up to 800g. S

I think he means the netherwing quests to get neutral with them.

Hira Snowdawn in Dalaran or Ilsa Blusterbrew in Shadowmoon Valley are not affiliated with the Valiance Expedition or Honor Hold so they will not give any faction-based discounts. However, Hargen Bronzewing in Honor Hold (he's just behind the Flight Master, in the stables) and Maigra Keenfeather in Valiance Keep (also just behind the Flight Master) give the promised faction discounts. (These NPCs are not present in Wowhead's database at the moment and I don't have access to a Horde character to locate their affiliated trainers.)

Also note Maigra's discount is based off of your Valiance Expedition reputation, while Hargen's discounts are based off of your Honor Hold status. Both trainers offer Apprentice Riding, Journeyman Riding, Expert Riding, and Artisan Riding, but neither will train you for Cold Weather Flying. Cold Weather Flying can only be purchased at the full 1000 gold price tag.

Man, I wish I remember that there was a discount for this. Bought artisan flying in Dalaran for 5000g, and I was exalted with Valiance Expedition, which means I could have saved 1000g... D'oh!

When you purchase Artisan Riding all epic and non-epic flying mounts will be able to be ridden at 280% speed

because there's more gold floating ingame now than there ever was before. there is literally no point in making things cheaper.
