If true, I'd imagine it's a bug. It's also the first I've heard about any such issue occuring. I'm also wagering, since you didn't post a picture, that you didn't take a screen shot of this occurance. Not saying I don't believe you, just saying there's room for doubt. Either way, like you said, this is easily avoidable by getting your Alchemy up high enough to learn all your elixirs/flasks/potions before you start doing research. Also, with 3.0.8 the research is going down to a 3 day cooldown and the herb cost is being reduced.
