Gnomish Army Knife

The Gnomish Army Knife acts as all of these items simultaneously.

-Mining Pick
-Skinning Knife
-Blacksmith hammer
-Flint and Tinder

Also has the on use effect "Overload the knife's battery to shock a dead player back to life. Cannot be used in combat. (30 mins Cooldown)"

Based on the tradeskill formula:

chance of gaining skill point = (grey skill - your skill) / (grey skill - yellow skill)

With an engineering skill of 445 you have a 50% chance to gain a point when making this. Most engineers make one pair of goggles which ups your skill to 446.

Assuming you make Gnomish Army Knives until you reach 450, you statistically need:
446-447: 3 (40% gain)
447-448: 4 (30% gain)
448-449: 5 (20% gain)
449-450: 10 (10% gain)
446-450: ~22 Gnomish Army Knives

This means 440 Saronite Ores, or 11 stacks of Saronite Bars, which currently go for around at least 40g per stack. So you are spending around 440g minimum to gain four skill points, and way more than that on certain realms where Saronite is more expensive.

A few tips when gaining the last skill points of engineering using the Gnomish Army Knife recipe:

• Save the goggles until you have 449 Engineering, as they remain orange and such guarantee a skill point where Gnomish Army Knives only provides a 10% chance. Doing this will theoretically save you 8 stacks of ores.

• Think through if you really need to max engineering. The only schematics you need 450 for are the motorcycle mounts (which in turn cost a minimum of 11000g) and the epic guns (which are Binds when equipped and such can be traded.)
• 
  Sell these! Gnomish Army Knives are currently very easy to sell through the Auction House for 10-20g, which will give you some bonus money for those spent Saronite Bars.
