Actual Amphora were invented by the Greeks, and continued in use till the late 9'th century by the Roman and Mediterranean cultures, respectively.
They were used in storing everything from wine, to olives, to fresh water for production uses.Amphora have been considered one of the top 5 most important tools created by men, in the likes of rope or knives.
It's interesting that blizzard would give something like an amphora to the highborn, and I think it shows how they've tried to reinforce how ancient their civilization is.
