Overview

Razorfen Downs is the quillboar's holy ground, now in the grip of the Scourge. The lich Amnennar the Coldbringer has turned the Death's Head quillboar into his servants, and the tunnels are full of undead boars, skeletons and cultists. It is a step up from the Kraul: longer, with tougher trash and more undead.

Two events shape the run. Near the start, the dragon Belnistrasz in quillboar form asks you to defend him while he destroys the idol that powers the Scourge here; that is a long, wave-based defence. Later, a gong in the Tuten'kash room summons a giant spider after three waves of undead. Everything else is careful trash and a few bosses with one trick each.

In WoW Forever the Dungeon Finder row starts at level 34, above the beta's level 30 cap. Blizzard opened Razorfen Downs to beta testers on October 1, so testers can enter it, but a level 30 group is under-levelled here. Expect it to be much harder in the beta than it will be for a level 35 group at launch.

Clear order

  1. Clear the first quillboar and undead, then speak to Belnistrasz and run the idol defence (Extinguishing the Idol).
  2. Continue into the tunnels to Tuten'kash's room. Ring the gong three times to summon him.
  3. Plaguemaw the Rotting comes during the idol defence. Mordresh Fire Eye is along the middle tunnels; Ragglesnout, a rare, may stand nearby.
  4. Glutton waits near the end of the tunnels.
  5. Finish with Amnennar the Coldbringer in the deepest chamber.

Group and preparation

  • Shackle Undead and Turn Undead are at their best here; most of the trash is undead.
  • Bring disease and poison cures; the plagued boars and Glutton spread disease.
  • Area damage for the two events. Both send waves of weak to medium mobs.
  • For a beta group at level 30, pull one pack at a time and rest fully between them. A level gap of four or five turns ordinary trash into tank-killers.
  • Why the level gap hurts so much: in Classic Era, every level a mob has over you raises its chance to dodge, parry and resist, and lowers yours to land hits and spells. A tank four levels under gets less threat per swing, healers get less per heal because the tank takes more, and casters see more resists. If you test Razorfen Downs at 30, bring the best gear you have and expect slow kills.
  • Forever's Undead Paladin gives the Horde a paladin for the first time: Turn Undead and Exorcism work on most of this dungeon.

What changed in WoW Forever

  • The beta client gives the Razorfen Downs Dungeon Finder row a minimum level of 34; the Classic Era client (1.15.9.70003) leaves that row without a level. [BETA-OBSERVED]
  • The October 1 beta notes opened Razorfen Downs to testers. Its Dungeon Finder row starts at level 34, four levels above the beta cap. [OFFICIAL]

Forever rules that apply to every dungeon

  • Dungeon mob XP was cut and dungeon quest XP raised; the October 1 notes then cut the extra dungeon quest XP by 50%. Do the quests. [REPORTED][OFFICIAL]
  • Dungeon boss unique drops are now blue, and BoP green and blue appearances go to every eligible looter. [OFFICIAL]
  • Blizzard says ordinary mobs take about 10 to 15 seconds to kill and crowd control still matters in dungeons. [OFFICIAL]

Extinguishing the Idol is a timed defence: Belnistrasz stands at the idol and channels while quillboar and undead attack from the paths. The tank stands at the idol, the group kills each wave as it arrives, and nobody chases. When he finishes, a chest appears with the reward.

The waves come from more than one direction, so put the ranged players and the healer close to the idol and the tank a few steps out. Clear the trash near the idol before you speak to him, or patrols join the waves.

Tuten'kash: strategy

Encounter 1 of 6 in the beta client. Classic Era mechanics; Forever beta unconfirmed. [CLASSIC ERA]

A giant undead spider summoned by the gong.

Abilities

AbilityWhat it doesAnswer
Curse of Tuten'kashA curse that slows attacks.Decurse the tank.
Web SprayRoots players around him.Nothing to do; wait it out.

Tactics

Clear the room, then ring the gong. The first two rings send waves of undead spiders, the third brings Tuten'kash himself, each from the tunnels around the room. Fight each wave near the gong, rest, and ring again. Tuten'kash is a plain fight once he arrives; decurse the tank and kill him.

  • Tank: Area threat on the waves; hold Tuten'kash where the group stands.
  • Healer: Rest to full between rings.
  • DPS: Area damage on the waves, single target on the spider.

Plaguemaw the Rotting: strategy

Encounter 2 of 6 in the beta client. Classic Era mechanics; Forever beta unconfirmed. [CLASSIC ERA]

A rotting undead quillboar who comes during the Belnistrasz idol defence.

Tactics

He arrives as part of the waves while Belnistrasz channels at the idol. Tank him next to the idol and kill him while the rest of the group handles the other wave mobs. On his own he is a tank and spank; the danger is a second wave landing while he is still up.

  • Tank: Stay next to the idol; do not chase him away from Belnistrasz.
  • Healer: Keep an eye on Belnistrasz too.
  • DPS: Plaguemaw first when he arrives, then the rest of the wave.

Mordresh Fire Eye: strategy

Encounter 3 of 6 in the beta client. Classic Era mechanics; Forever beta unconfirmed. [CLASSIC ERA]

A skeletal caster in the middle tunnels, with non-elite skeletons around him.

Abilities

AbilityWhat it doesAnswer
FireballFire damage on a player.Interrupt.
Fire NovaFire damage around him.Melee expect it; ranged stay back.

Tactics

Kill the skeletons around him with area damage. Pull him around a corner so he walks into melee. Interrupt Fireball. He is short-lived when he is in melee and cannot cast freely.

  • Tank: Line-of-sight pull; he is a caster.
  • Healer: Fire Nova hits melee; keep them up.
  • DPS: Interrupt Fireball whenever it is cast.

Ragglesnout: strategy

Encounter 4 of 6 in the beta client. Classic Era mechanics; Forever beta unconfirmed. [CLASSIC ERA]

A Classic Era rare quillboar caster who may stand in one of the tunnels. Optional.

Abilities

AbilityWhat it doesAnswer
Dominate MindTakes control of a player.Do not kill them; crowd control them or burn him.
HealHeals himself.Interrupt.
Shadow BoltShadow damage on a player.Interrupt when you can.

Tactics

If he is there, clear his guards and kill him; pull him alone and away from other packs. Do not search for him.

Glutton: strategy

Encounter 5 of 6 in the beta client. Classic Era mechanics; Forever beta unconfirmed. [CLASSIC ERA]

A huge abomination near the end of the tunnels.

Abilities

AbilityWhat it doesAnswer
Disease CloudA disease aura around him.Cure disease; ranged stay back.
EnrageAt low health he hits much harder.Save cooldowns for the end.

Tactics

Clear the approach, then fight him with the tank in front. Ranged damage dealers and the healer stay back out of the disease cloud, and the melee cure each other when it ends.

  • Tank: Defensive cooldown when he enrages.
  • Healer: Out of the cloud; you are useless if diseased and slowed.
  • DPS: Burst him in the last fifth so the enrage is short.

Amnennar the Coldbringer: strategy

Encounter 6 of 6 in the beta client. Classic Era mechanics; Forever beta unconfirmed. [CLASSIC ERA]

The lich who rules the Downs. Frost damage to the whole group and spectre adds.

Abilities

AbilityWhat it doesAnswer
Amnennar's WrathFrost damage to everyone near him.Healer keeps everyone high; ranged stay back.
Frost NovaRoots players near him.Ranged stand out of range.
Summon Frost SpectresAs his health drops he calls Frost Spectres.Tank picks them up; kill them or ignore and burn Amnennar.

Tactics

Clear his chamber, then pull him. He hits the whole group with frost and calls spectres at health thresholds. The group decides before the pull: kill the spectres, or ignore them and burn Amnennar. With enough damage, burning him is faster. Frost resistance helps, but no one needs to farm it for a five-player dungeon.

If the spectres reach the healer, the healer runs to the tank rather than away; area threat and the group's damage then catch them together. A mage's Frost Nova or Blizzard on the spectres buys time, and a mage who sees many resists on Amnennar switches to fire or arcane.

  • Tank: Hold him where you stand and grab spectres with area threat.
  • Healer: Group healing, not only tank healing.
  • DPS: Stay out of Frost Nova range if you are ranged.

Abilities and tactics describe how these fights work in Classic Era; the WoW Forever beta can change any of them, and Blizzard has said boss loot and stats were reworked. Nothing here is a drop rate or a timing we measured. Loot rows come from the Adventure Guide match further down the page; the beta client cannot say how often anything drops.
