Overview
Shadowfang Keep is the castle of Baron Silverlaine, taken over by Archmage Arugal and the worgen he summoned. It is a dark, vertical dungeon: you start in the cellar, fight up through the courtyard, the dining hall, the ramparts and the tower, and finish with Arugal on the roof.
The trash is the hard part. Worgen packs hit hard, the Shadowfang Darkweavers and Moonwalkers cast while the melee chews on the tank, and the undead servants and ghosts add up quickly in the narrow rooms. The bosses mostly have one trick each. Wolf Master Nandos and Arugal are where groups wipe.
In WoW Forever the Dungeon Finder row starts at level 18, the same bracket as Wailing Caverns and the new Ruins of Lordaeron. Our beta cache already has both Undercity quests for the keep. Arugal Must Die rewards the Seal of Sylvanas ring, a strong ring for this level range.
Clear order
- Clear the cellar and kill Rethilgore. Talk to the prisoner in the cell next to him to open the courtyard door.
- Kill Razorclaw the Butcher in the kitchen area, then fight through the dining hall to Baron Silverlaine.
- Clear the courtyard and the barracks to Commander Springvale and his guards.
- Climb the ramparts. Odo the Blindwatcher waits with his worgen on the upper level.
- Go down to Fenrus the Devourer, then up into the tower to Wolf Master Nandos. His death opens the door to Arugal.
- Finish with Archmage Arugal on the roof.
Group and preparation
- A tank who can hold three or four mobs. Worgen packs are bigger than in the first dungeons.
- Bring curse and poison removal if you can. Fenrus poisons, and some Darkweavers and ghosts curse.
- Crowd control: Polymorph works on worgen (they are humanoids), and Shackle Undead works on the servants.
- Kill casters first in every mixed pack: Darkweavers, Moonwalkers and Whitescalps cast while the melee hold the tank.
- New in Forever for Alliance: Dwarf Shamans. Tremor Totem and Poison Cleansing Totem both help here.
What changed in WoW Forever
- The beta client gives the Shadowfang Keep Dungeon Finder row a minimum level of 18; the Classic Era client (1.15.9.70003) leaves that row without a level. [BETA-OBSERVED]
- The Book of Ur in our beta cache offers three reward choices; one of them (item 270030) is not a Classic Era item. Arugal Must Die still rewards the Seal of Sylvanas alone. [BETA-OBSERVED]
Forever rules that apply to every dungeon
- Dungeon mob XP was cut and dungeon quest XP raised; the October 1 notes then cut the extra dungeon quest XP by 50%. Do the quests. [REPORTED][OFFICIAL]
- Dungeon boss unique drops are now blue, and BoP green and blue appearances go to every eligible looter. [OFFICIAL]
- Blizzard says ordinary mobs take about 10 to 15 seconds to kill and crowd control still matters in dungeons. [OFFICIAL]
Quests
Seen in the beta
These quests are in our WoW Forever beta quest cache and sort under this dungeon in the quest log. Levels, XP and reward counts are the client's own. Base XP comes from the client's quest XP table; the extra dungeon-quest XP Forever adds is granted by the server and is not in the client, so the real reward is higher. [BETA-OBSERVED]
| Quest | Objective (client text) | Level | Base XP (client table) | Reward items | Vs Era |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Book of Ur | Bring the Book of Ur to Keeper Bel'dugur at the Apothecarium in the Undercity. | 26 (min 16) | 2,100 | 3 | In Era (text not compared) |
| Arugal Must Die | Kill Arugal and bring his head to Dalar Dawnweaver at the Sepulcher. | 27 (min 18) | 3,300 | 1 | In Era (text not compared) |
Classic Era quests for this dungeon
Classic Era quests for this dungeon that are not in our beta cache yet. Forever has over 1,000 new quests and has changed dungeon quest XP, so treat this as the Classic baseline until each one shows up in the beta cache. [CLASSIC ERA]
| Quest | Start | Side | What you do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deathstalkers in Shadowfang | High Executor Hadrec, the Sepulcher | Horde | Find Deathstalker Adamant and Deathstalker Vincent inside. |
| The Test of Righteousness | Jordan Stilwell, outside Ironforge | Alliance (paladin) | Part of the Verigan's Fist chain; one piece is Jordan's Smithing Hammer from the keep. |
| The Orb of Soran'ruk | Doan Karhan, the Barrens | Both (warlock) | Soran'ruk fragments come from Blackfathom Deeps acolytes and the large fragment from Shadowfang Keep. |
Alliance players have only class quests here, which is why most Alliance groups skip the keep. Horde players should do all three Undercity and Sepulcher quests in one run.
Notable trash
Classic Era mechanics; Forever beta unconfirmed. [CLASSIC ERA]
| Mob | What it does and how to handle it |
|---|---|
| Shadowfang Moonwalker | Worgen caster. Interrupt and kill first. |
| Shadowfang Darkweaver | Shadow caster that curses. Kill or Polymorph it. |
| Shadowfang Whitescalp | Frost caster; slows the group. Kill early. |
| Shadowfang Ragetooth | Enrages at low health and hits much harder. Burst it through the end. |
| Shadowfang Wolfguard and Glutton | Melee worgen. Fine on the tank; just do not let them reach the healer. |
| Haunted Servitor and Wailing Guardsman | Undead in the halls; some fear or curse. Shackle one in big pulls. |
| Bleak Worg, Slavering Worg and Lupine Horror | Wolves in the upper areas. Lupine Horrors are the strongest; they come with Nandos too. |
| Son of Arugal | Strong worgen near the top. Tank it away from the healer. |
| Deathsworn Captain | A Classic Era rare warrior with Cleave. Kill him if he is up. |
Rethilgore: strategy
Encounter 1 of 8 in the beta client. Classic Era mechanics; Forever beta unconfirmed. [CLASSIC ERA]
A worgen jailer in the cellar. The first gate check.
Abilities
| Ability | What it does | Answer |
|---|---|---|
| Soul Drain | Drains health from a player. | Healer tops up the target; it is not dangerous alone. |
| Wavering Will | A debuff on players near him. | Nothing to do but heal through. |
Tactics
Clear the worgen around the cellar first. Rethilgore is then a short melee fight. After he dies, speak to the prisoner in the nearby cell (Sorcerer Ashcrombe for the Alliance, Deathstalker Adamant for the Horde) and he opens the courtyard door for you.
- Tank: Pull him to the cellar door so nothing else joins.
- DPS: Straight damage; no interrupts needed.
Razorclaw the Butcher: strategy
Encounter 2 of 8 in the beta client. Classic Era mechanics; Forever beta unconfirmed. [CLASSIC ERA]
The castle's butcher, in the kitchen area beyond the courtyard door.
Abilities
| Ability | What it does | Answer |
|---|---|---|
| Butcher Drain | Drains health from his target. | Heal through it. |
Tactics
A simple fight with a lot of melee damage. Clear the trash near the kitchen first, then tank him where he stands.
Baron Silverlaine: strategy
Encounter 3 of 8 in the beta client. Classic Era mechanics; Forever beta unconfirmed. [CLASSIC ERA]
The ghost of the castle's lord, in the dining hall.
Abilities
| Ability | What it does | Answer |
|---|---|---|
| Veil of Shadow | A curse that cuts healing taken by the target by three quarters. | Interrupt the cast; if it lands, decurse the tank quickly (mages and druids). |
Tactics
Clear the hall, then pull him. The fight is about Veil of Shadow on the tank. With a decurser, it is easy. Without one, the healer has to keep the tank high before the curse lands, and the group burns him fast.
- Tank: Call out when Veil lands on you.
- Healer: Pre-heal; your heals are weak while Veil is up.
- DPS: Mages and druids: decurse the tank before you attack again.
Commander Springvale: strategy
Encounter 4 of 8 in the beta client. Classic Era mechanics; Forever beta unconfirmed. [CLASSIC ERA]
A dead paladin commander in a room full of adds.
Abilities
| Ability | What it does | Answer |
|---|---|---|
| Holy Light | Heals himself, especially at low health. | Interrupt every cast. |
| Divine Shield | Makes him immune for a short time. | Stop and wait; save interrupts for the heal that follows. |
Tactics
He comes with Shadowfang guards. Crowd control one, kill the other, then Springvale. Interrupt Holy Light every time; a landed heal can undo half a minute of damage.
- Tank: Hold Springvale while the group kills his guard.
- DPS: Two people on interrupt duty.
Odo the Blindwatcher: strategy
Encounter 5 of 8 in the beta client. Classic Era mechanics; Forever beta unconfirmed. [CLASSIC ERA]
A blind worgen on the upper level, with Vile Bats around him.
Abilities
| Ability | What it does | Answer |
|---|---|---|
| Howling Rage | As his health drops, he goes into a rage that raises his damage and attack speed. | Save tank cooldowns for the end; burst him through it. |
Tactics
Pull him to you around a corner so his bats come bunched up. Kill the bats with area damage, then Odo. He hits harder the lower he gets, so the last third of his health is where the tank needs a defensive cooldown or the healer's best heals.
Fenrus the Devourer: strategy
Encounter 6 of 8 in the beta client. Classic Era mechanics; Forever beta unconfirmed. [CLASSIC ERA]
A huge wolf in a lower room off the ramparts.
Abilities
| Ability | What it does | Answer |
|---|---|---|
| Toxic Saliva | A nature poison on his target. | Cure poison if you can; Poison Cleansing Totem works well here. |
Tactics
Pull him away from the doorways and tank and spank. The poison is the only thing to manage. When he dies, Arugal appears nearby and summons voidwalkers; be ready for a small extra fight.
Wolf Master Nandos: strategy
Encounter 7 of 8 in the beta client. Classic Era mechanics; Forever beta unconfirmed. [CLASSIC ERA]
Arugal's wolf handler, at the top of the tower stairs, with a pack of worgs.
Abilities
| Ability | What it does | Answer |
|---|---|---|
| Summon wolves | From about 80% health he summons wolves as the fight goes on: Lupine Horrors, Bleak Worgs and Slavering Worgs. | Area damage and a tank who can grab adds. Kill the Lupine Horrors first. |
Tactics
This is the fight that kills groups. Clear every wolf pack on the stairs first; do not pull Nandos with them. When he calls his wolves, the tank uses area threat and the group kills the Lupine Horrors first because they hit hardest. If the adds pile up, burn Nandos, since the wolves stop coming when he dies. His death opens the door to Arugal.
- Tank: Stand where adds have to come through one doorway.
- Healer: Stay close to the tank, not on the stairs where new wolves enter.
- DPS: Kill order: Lupine Horrors, then Nandos, then the rest.
Archmage Arugal: strategy
Encounter 8 of 8 in the beta client. Classic Era mechanics; Forever beta unconfirmed. [CLASSIC ERA]
The mage who brought the worgen to Gilneas. He teleports around the roof and curses players into worgen.
Abilities
| Ability | What it does | Answer |
|---|---|---|
| Arugal's Curse | Turns a player into a worgen who attacks their own group for a short time. It cannot be dispelled. | Do not kill the cursed player; crowd control or avoid them until it ends. |
| Void Bolt | Heavy shadow damage on a player. | Healer reacts fast; it is the main source of deaths. |
| Teleport | He blinks between spots around the roof. | Ranged damage dealers chase him with spells; the tank follows. |
Tactics
Arugal is a mobile caster. He teleports to set spots around the roof, and the group has to follow and keep hitting him. Ranged damage does most of the work. Keep the healer in a central spot with line of sight to as much of the roof as possible.
When a player turns into a worgen, they attack the group for a short time. Do not kill them. Step away, or stun or slow them, and keep healing. The curse fades on its own. The group that keeps calm here wins; the group that panics loses its healer.
- Tank: Follow him when he teleports and keep him busy; he still has to be tanked.
- Healer: Watch Void Bolt targets and keep your distance from cursed players.
- DPS: Ranged: hit him the moment he lands. Melee: follow him to each new spot.
Compared with Classic Era
- Shadowfang Keep Dungeon Finder level: 0 in Era, 18 in Forever.

Sources and method
Written and checked by TheWoWDB on October 5, 2026. Abilities and tactics describe how these fights work in Classic Era; the WoW Forever beta can change any of them, and Blizzard has said boss loot and stats were reworked. Nothing here is a drop rate or a timing we measured. Loot rows come from the Adventure Guide match further down the page; the beta client cannot say how often anything drops.
