LayoutA maze of tunnels and pools; the four Fanglords can be done in any order

Overview

Wailing Caverns is the first big Horde dungeon and one of the easiest places to get lost in Azeroth. The night elf druid Naralex tried to heal the Barrens through the Emerald Dream and fell into a nightmare. His Druids of the Fang went bad with him. The run is about killing the four Fanglords, then waking Naralex.

The danger here is not any single boss. It is the casters. Druids of the Fang heal, put people to sleep and shift into serpents, and the four Fanglords do the same with more health. A group that interrupts heals and kills casters first finds the whole place easy. A group that lets every heal land doubles the run time.

The second danger is the map. The caverns loop back on themselves, the pools connect under water, and respawns catch groups who take a long wrong turn. Agree on the route before the first pull.

Clear order

  1. The beta client lists the bosses as Anacondra, Cobrahn, Kresh, Pythas, Skum, Serpentis, Verdan and Mutanus, which is also the order most groups take them.
  2. Clear toward each Fanglord along the main paths; skip side tunnels unless you need quest mobs from them.
  3. Kresh swims in a large pool and Skum sits in water too. Both are optional, so decide before you swim past them.
  4. After Serpentis, Verdan is the last boss before the event. Then walk back to the Disciple of Naralex near the start and begin the escort. Mutanus the Devourer spawns at the end.

Group and preparation

  • Interrupts decide this dungeon: a warrior's Shield Bash, a rogue's Kick, a shaman's Earth Shock or a mage's Counterspell on every Healing Touch.
  • A priest or paladin can dispel the magical sleep the druids cast. Whoever is free should break it on the healer first.
  • Bring antivenom if you can (first aid makes it), or a shaman with Cure Poison: deviate beasts poison on hit.
  • Mark one caster per pull for crowd control. Druids of the Fang are humanoids in their caster form, so Polymorph works.

What changed in WoW Forever

  • The beta client gives the Wailing Caverns Dungeon Finder row a minimum level of 17; the Classic Era client (1.15.9.70003) leaves that row without a level. [BETA-OBSERVED]
  • The October 1 notes say Serpentbloom Snakes now despawn after a couple of minutes. That means picking Serpentbloom for Apothecary Zamah's quest can spawn snakes in Forever, which we do not know from Classic Era. [OFFICIAL]
  • Serpentbloom in our beta cache offers three reward choices, two of them items that are not in Classic Era (ids 270008 and 270009). [BETA-OBSERVED]

Forever rules that apply to every dungeon

  • Dungeon mob XP was cut and dungeon quest XP raised; the October 1 notes then cut the extra dungeon quest XP by 50%. Do the quests. [REPORTED][OFFICIAL]
  • Dungeon boss unique drops are now blue, and BoP green and blue appearances go to every eligible looter. [OFFICIAL]
  • Blizzard says ordinary mobs take about 10 to 15 seconds to kill and crowd control still matters in dungeons. [OFFICIAL]

Quests

Seen in the beta

These quests are in our WoW Forever beta quest cache and sort under this dungeon in the quest log. Levels, XP and reward counts are the client's own. Base XP comes from the client's quest XP table; the extra dungeon-quest XP Forever adds is granted by the server and is not in the client, so the real reward is higher. [BETA-OBSERVED]

Notable trash

Classic Era mechanics; Forever beta unconfirmed. [CLASSIC ERA]

MobWhat it does and how to handle it
Druid of the FangCasts Healing Touch, Lightning Bolt and Druid's Slumber, and shifts into a serpent when hurt. Interrupt the heal, dispel or wait out the sleep, kill it first.
Deviate Faerie DragonA fast flier in the deeper caverns that harasses casters. Kill it quickly; do not let it roam into other packs.
Deviate Stinglasher, Venomwing and RavagerBeasts that poison or hit hard. Fine one at a time; dangerous when a raptor pack adds on.
Deviate Guardian and Deviate AdderCommon pulls in the lower tunnels. They link up near the pools, so pull with a ranged shot.
Evolving EctoplasmOozes in the deeper rooms that change which magic school hurts them. Melee them and move on.
Mad MagglishA goblin rare who often hides at the back of a side room. He drops the 99-Year-Old Port for Trouble at the Docks.

Lady Anacondra: strategy

Encounter 1 of 8 in the beta client. Classic Era mechanics; Forever beta unconfirmed. [CLASSIC ERA]

The first Fanglord, on a ledge with Druids of the Fang around her.

Abilities

AbilityWhat it doesAnswer
Lightning BoltRanged nature damage on a random target.Healer keeps everyone, not only the tank, topped up.
Druid's SlumberPuts a player to sleep.Dispel it on the healer first.
Healing TouchA big heal on herself.Interrupt every cast.
ThornsDamages melee attackers.Mild at this level; ignore it.

Tactics

Clear the druids on the ledge first, one pack at a time. Then pull Anacondra back to where you stand so she does not drag fresh packs. Set an interrupt order of two people for Healing Touch. That is the whole fight.

  • Tank: Pull her around a corner so she has to come to you; casters that come into melee cast less.
  • Healer: Stay out of her line of sight until she is next to the tank.
  • DPS: Interrupts first, damage second.

Loot listed for Lady Anacondra (Adventure Guide match, below).

Lord Cobrahn: strategy

Encounter 2 of 8 in the beta client. Classic Era mechanics; Forever beta unconfirmed. [CLASSIC ERA]

The second Fanglord. Like Anacondra, but at low health he becomes a giant serpent.

Abilities

AbilityWhat it doesAnswer
Lightning BoltRanged nature damage.Heal through it.
Druid's SlumberSleep on a player.Dispel it.
Healing TouchHeals himself.Interrupt.
Serpent FormBelow half health he turns into a serpent and fights in melee, poisoning his target.Once he shifts he stops casting; tank him and burn him down.

Tactics

His room has guards nearby. Pull him away, interrupt heals in the caster phase, and expect a short melee phase at the end with a poison on the tank.

Loot listed for Lord Cobrahn (Adventure Guide match, below).

Kresh: strategy

Encounter 3 of 8 in the beta client. Classic Era mechanics; Forever beta unconfirmed. [CLASSIC ERA]

A giant turtle that swims around the big pool. Optional.

Abilities

AbilityWhat it doesAnswer
Melee onlyNo spells; a lot of armor.Physical damage is slow on him; casters do the work.

Tactics

He drifts through the water and is easy to pull by accident while swimming between platforms. Kill him on land if you want his drop; otherwise skip him.

Loot listed for Kresh (Adventure Guide match, below).

Lord Pythas: strategy

Encounter 4 of 8 in the beta client. Classic Era mechanics; Forever beta unconfirmed. [CLASSIC ERA]

The third Fanglord, with the same caster kit and a Druid of the Fang at his side.

Abilities

AbilityWhat it doesAnswer
Lightning BoltRanged nature damage.Heal through it.
Druid's SlumberSleep on a player.Dispel it.
Healing TouchHeals himself.Interrupt.

Tactics

Same plan as Anacondra, with one more caster: kill or crowd control his Druid of the Fang first, then interrupt his heals. Keep ranged players spread so his bolts do not all land on one person.

Loot listed for Lord Pythas (Adventure Guide match, below).

Skum: strategy

Encounter 5 of 8 in the beta client. Classic Era mechanics; Forever beta unconfirmed. [CLASSIC ERA]

A large thunder lizard in a pool near the faerie dragons.

Abilities

AbilityWhat it doesAnswer
Chained BoltLightning that jumps between players.Interrupt it, and spread out so the bounce has fewer targets.
Nature immunityHe takes no nature damage.Druids and shamans switch to other spells or melee.

Tactics

Pull him out of the water to land so the fight does not drift into the deep pool. Spread a little and burn him. He has no other tricks.

Loot listed for Skum (Adventure Guide match, below).

Lord Serpentis: strategy

Encounter 6 of 8 in the beta client. Classic Era mechanics; Forever beta unconfirmed. [CLASSIC ERA]

The last Fanglord, at the top of the upper path, with the full caster kit.

Abilities

AbilityWhat it doesAnswer
Lightning BoltRanged nature damage.Heal through it.
Druid's SlumberSleep on a player.Dispel it.
Healing TouchHeals himself.Interrupt.

Tactics

The path up to him has druids and deviates. Clear them slowly. He is the same fight as the others. When he dies, all four gem quests for Leaders of the Fang are done.

Loot listed for Lord Serpentis (Adventure Guide match, below).

Verdan the Everliving: strategy

Encounter 7 of 8 in the beta client. Classic Era mechanics; Forever beta unconfirmed. [CLASSIC ERA]

A huge plant creature in a deep room near Serpentis. He hits hard and knocks the group down.

Abilities

AbilityWhat it doesAnswer
Grasping VinesRoots everyone within about 10 yards and stuns them briefly.Ranged players stand back; the tank holds him still.

Tactics

A straight fight with a lot of health. Keep the healer out of melee range so the vines do not hit them, and let the tank build threat before the damage starts.

Loot listed for Verdan the Everliving (Adventure Guide match, below).

Mutanus the Devourer: strategy

Encounter 8 of 8 in the beta client. Classic Era mechanics; Forever beta unconfirmed. [CLASSIC ERA]

The murloc horror that appears at the end of the Naralex escort.

Abilities

AbilityWhat it doesAnswer
Naralex's NightmarePuts a player to sleep.Dispel it, or wake the player with damage.
ThundercrackDamages and stuns everyone around him.Ranged players stay back; the tank and healer save cooldowns for it.
TerrifyFears a player.A shaman's Tremor Totem helps; otherwise pick up loose adds.

Tactics

Speak to the Disciple of Naralex at the entrance after the four Fanglords die. He walks to Naralex and starts a ritual. Snakes and then oozes attack him, about ten mobs in all. Kill them fast and keep them off the Disciple; if he dies, the event fails.

When the ritual ends, Mutanus spawns. Tank him where you stand and burst him. Naralex wakes when he dies, and Mutanus drops the Glowing Shard that starts a short quest in Ratchet.

  • Tank: During the waves, stand next to the Disciple and taunt anything that reaches him.
  • Healer: Keep a heal ready for the Disciple too.
  • DPS: Kill wave mobs in the order they reach the Disciple.
