I was able to get gold on this race by taking it slow in the beginning. I used Surge Forward once at the start and then again right before the first vigor recharge. After that I used it just to keep up the normal surge forward speed; I did not spam it. After the first lava river pass I used Whirling Surge and stayed low to the ground and I had the vigor to maintain speed going up the lava fall. After that I started spamming Surge Forward and got gold with a time of 66.595 seconds. It will seem like you are going painfully slow at the beginning, but you will make up that time and more by all the speed you have on the back stretch.
