This one is a nuisance, for sure. Something to consider trying if you're having difficulty getting gold: try zooming all the way in to first-person view. Doing so makes the camera a lot less of a problem and makes it easier to see what's coming up. I got gold with a second to spare on my second try in first-person view.
EDIT: Works well for the reverse course, too.

The time isn't horrible on this but hitting the thorns in this race is incredibly frustrating.
this is the most difficult but also the most annoying race for me personally. Some races were difficult, but still enjoyable, this one however was just awful for me.
