You start out being able to plant 4 separate crops a day (one seed per plot). As you raise your reputation with the Tillers, you will unlock additional plots 4 at a time.
At Revered you will be able to plant 12 crops a day. The crops grow over night, not over 24 hours. So if you plant a crop at 10am or 10pm, they are both fully grown after midnight.

Note that the criteria is wrong. You can harvest any crop. This is an award for harvesting 100 plots. The crops do not matter.
The time was changed in 5.1.0. Now there is a timer that says how long until they can be harvested. On my server, it coincides with the Daily Reset, not midnight.
