Ancient Tome of Portal: Dalaran

This portal is THE best portal spell for people like me. I have always loved the idea of opening portals to random places for those that don't watch where they're going, or opening portal roulette (portals on top of each other so you get ported to a random place).

Now this portal teleports you into MID AIR for EVERYONE. That means it is possible to create a RUSSIAN PORTAL ROULETTE now, which could never be done before.

However taking this portal DOES NOT dismount you. So it's only possible to kill people that are not on flying mounts.

Obtained from Endora Moorehead after learning the personal teleport.

Takes you to Dalaran Crater in Hillsbrad.

I can confirm that the Ancient tome of portal: dalaran did not show up for me until i learned the Ancient Tome of Teleport: Dalaran from scarlet halls

Just so people know you dont have to do the 2 quests, can just run to the last boss kill and loot the tome to the right.

I sat for ages waiting for the Tome to appear at Endora and waited and waited. I didn't appear.

I then went and got the teleport version from the Scarlet Halls, which is behind and to the right of you as enter the room and after you kill the last boss. I then teleported back to Dalaran (Northrend) and the book was there.

So I assume you need the Teleport before you can see the portal tome.

One more thing, always use the portal when mounted then you don't die.

For those wondering about portals to places that no longer exist such as old Dalaran and Theramore, the answer can be found in one of the filler books in Dalaran for the "Higher Learning" Achievement entitled "Thinking with Portals - A Memorandum on Proper Portal Usage" ([object=192881]#comments)

Rule number 1 about portals is below - mages have the ability to create portals to anywhere, but the penalty for doing so to a non Kirin-Tor approved destination is forbidden and punishable with death (through I'd love to get my hands on one of these D-6 Permits). Despite the cities no longer being there the portal designations were already established and thus can still be used without Jaina hunting you down.

"Rule #1: Do not create a portal to anywhere but the designated Kirin Tor portal drop-off zones. The most dangerous aspect of the portal spell is its vast potential. We realize it's easy for a mage to create a door to anywhere, so our only way to combat such potentially deadly acts is to make it punishable by death.
Special Issue License D-6 permits open portal usage, but is rarely issued. Speak with your local Portal Trainer about qualifying for this license.".

My husband and I went to buy this at the same time. I bought mine and it took one hour for the respawn for him.

Found this teleport convenient to get north quick for the Winter Veil's You're a Mean One....

Edit (Oct 23, 2014): Also useful to quickly get north to do Hallow's End's A Time to Lose.

I like to place this on top of a Banquet, Noodle Cart, Soulwell, or Mage Food in LFR. I typically get 2 or 3 every raid. I know it is pretty messed up but it is funny as hell.

By the way, don't do this if you are the only Mage.

If you're doing this in Legion, when people said port back to Dalaran and buy the tome from Endora Moorehead, they meant the OLD Dalaran in Northrend. NOT the NEW Dalaran in Legion. Took me a while to realize that.

As some comments mention, this is of limited supply from the vendor.

The uncornfirmed respawn time is about 30 mins. I had a friend buy one and when I logged to my mage 15 mins later, it was not there.
Waited a bit and then saw it for sale.

I say unconfirmed because I didn't time it as such but more rough timings.

This might help some people if they are struggling to get it from the vendor.

I place this portal to people who demand portals instead of asking nicely.
I know I'm a prick for doing so, but hey, "please" goes a long way instead of "Make me a portal to Dalaran".

I'm not sure but i think you need to get Ancient Tome of Teleport: Dalaran first. You can find it at the bookshelf after you have killed the last boss in the new Scarlet Halls. Character gets her name from the 'Bewitched' series. Sames mother is Endora, played by Agnes Moorehead, who also starred in a great episode of 'The Twilight Zone'.

One minor addition: the book is actually three book cases in from the door, the description above makes it sounds like it's right next to the door. I ran this a few times thinking I'd failed until I found a video which showed the precise location. :-)

There are comments on this page about looting this in Scarlet Monastery. That is incorrect. *THIS* book is for the PORTAL, i.e. the one other people can go through, and is sold in limited quantities in Dalaran by [npc=28715]. Ancient Tome of Teleport: Dalaran is the item that is looted inside the Scarlet Monastery dungeon, and it teaches the personal teleport.

Out of curiosity, I took my level 87 mage into the Scarlet Halls. I was able to loot the Ancient Teleport: Dalaran tome, but of course cannot use it yet.

When I first went to the vendor the book wasn't for sale. (I already had the teleport spell)

I teleported out of Dalaran then back and the vendor had been 'restocked' with the 'Ancient Tome of Portal: Dalaran' and a few other items.

The vendor - Endora Moorehead <Magical Goods>- is NOT in the sewers any more. But in the shop above called 'Sisters Sorcerous'
/way 38.82, 53.14 Endora.

I just realized that https://www.wowhead.com/npc=28715 is the name of Samantha's mother on Bewitched... Mother's name is Endora and the last name of the actress that played her was Moorehead.. Sorry.. just a random thought...

Should not be attempted on the following. Druids with flight form, Pandaren rogues with glyph of safe-fall, Mages, engineers, priests, players on a flying mount, monks with gylph of zen meditation, or anyone with great luck with noggenfogger. Enjoy ^.~

In Scarlet Halls, just want to put this out there, If your elemental kills the boss without u hitting, u won't get credit and won't be able to loot the book. Run out and reset instances and re-enter. Found this out the hard way. Hope it helps.

This is one of the Mage Class Books that existed long before Legion, though many new Class Books have been added since Legion's pre-patch. These Class Books have similar effects to traditional glyph's. This puts a new Ability in your Spellbook.

as of 11/7/2022 this item is still gettable, but it seems you still have to grab the book from the shelf in Scarlet Halls.

follow the instructions in the top comment, it still works perfectly about 3 weeks before Dragonflight.

i waited about 4 hours in Dalaran, checking the vendor every few minutes...no book.

i did one Scarlet Halls run, looted the book, ported back to Dalaran, and there it was.

Be sure to create the portal inside a building, forces them to be dismounted!

Very useful for around Winter's Veil (if you have a slowfall!)

Seriously, if my Portal Trainer ever offered me Special Issue License D-6 I'd be all over that.

Note that the current top-rated post on this page, by Uroon, says that to buy the limited-availability PORTAL recipe from Endora Moorehead, you FIRST have to kill and loot the boss in Scarlet Halls, then take and learn the TELEPORT recipe. Presumably the PORTAL recipe won't be for sale otherwise. I don't know if that's true, but given that the post currently has 216 upvotes, and nobody has said otherwise, it seems likely.

[npc=28715] Still sells Ancient Tome of Portal: Dalaran, however it is a limited supply item and it Is not always available for purchase.

Looking at the vendor is a (1) item meaning it is on a timer as she only sells 1 at a time.

I find it funny..

People trying to scalp it for 50K gold is hardly "very affordable". I guess it depends on the server, but this definitely should have been BoP.

I had a GM that liked to open this portal instead of regular Dal after a raid as a joke

So Mage player characters will be seen as the leader of their class in Legion, but still not qualify, huh? I guess that explains portals made by some NPCs though, like at the end of raids.

As of patch 9.0.1 (Shadowlands Prepatch) this could still be obtained.

Make sure you get the Teleport book first off a shelf on the right side once you kill and loot the last boss in Scarlet Halls (right entrance in SM). Then go back to Endora and the tome for the Portal may be there. Otherwise, wait about 30 min for restock.
It should go without saying but since people farm these to sell on the AH, you need to be a mage to see these tomes.

As of 2/7/25 you can still get the book that you learn the teleport spell in scarlet monastery, and the Ancient Tome of Portal: Dalaran is then avalable at the Sisters Sorcerous in Northrend Dalaran.

Well, yes and no. It's also a handy way for the Alliance to easily get to the northern end of the Eastern Kingdoms, since there's no other portal location nearby (other than the Isle of Quel'Danas via Shattrath).

Is this still available? I went to Dalaran to get this and everything she sales is there except for this. Any ideas?

To avoid falling to your death when taking this portal, you can simply mount up on a flying mount before clicking the portal and you will not fall.
