TheWoWDBI could not complete this quest for about a month. I would pick it up and go catch a pet, bring it back and the quest requirement would never be fulfilled. I wrote a few tickets, talked to GMs. They told me to rename files, gave me a link to wowhead (which did not help since no one has commented on this quest yet), and writing a ticket really did not help.
Finally I got the idea to just try it on another character. It worked on my alt. So if you are having issues with completing the quest, just try it on another character.

Make sure you haven't already caught one of the type you try to catch. I think you have to catch one not previously collected.

Description
Great work so far, {name}! You are going to be a pro at this pet stuff before you know it. Now it's time to catch a pet of your own! Head back out and find a battle pet to fight, engage it in battle, and throw your trap once it's low on health. Bring your catch back for me to see once you are finished. Remember, you need at least one pet at level 3 to use your trap!
