TheWoWDBYou do not need to have the pet summoned, and you do not need to have it take a round in the fight. As long as the hatchling is on the active pet battle team, you will get credit.
Just out of curiosity, I put the Direbeak in the fight and let it die. I then completed the fight and still got credit.
