Dont use this spell. It is too expensive. I dont know about the drop rate, but it didnt take much grinding or sth like that, but soon i got Magnificence of Leather . Both spells share the same Cooldown. Because the Prismatic Scale s should be more expensive, it is obvious which CD you should use. ^^
On my panda monk, I try to get as much prismatic scale as I can to use the Magnificence of Scales, since I'm not as likely to craft a mail item, as I am a leather item user. This also makes it cheaper when I'm short of Magnificent Hides, to make the Hardened Magnificent Hide from the crafted Magnificence of Scales(20 prismatic scales), plus a Magnificent Hide (50 exotic leather).
On my hunter, I do the opposite. I use the leather for Magnificence of Leather, plus a Magnificent Hide.

I second this. I was operating under the assumption that Magnificence of Scales would yield only mail items. I was wrong. I feel that Magnificence of Scales should yield strictly mail items (with a low leather item proc at the most)and vice versa, but I guess my logic is flawed by Blizz'O'nomic standards. Anyway, a good farming spot for multiple exotic leather (94% drop rate 1-10) and a high drop rate for scales (30% drop rater 1-6) is in the Townlong SteppesTownlong Steppesbetween the Shadopan Garrison and the Underbough. There are groups of Longshadow Mushan [npc=61618]. Corral em kill em skin em! Happy hunting.
Yea, i agree with you. Your assumption would make sense. Especially the fact, that you need the exact amount of mats (20 for both) for both spells http://www.wowhead.com/spell=140041 is just a +1 in your recipe book and will never be used after getting the system to recieve the proc recipes. :)

You can do this for all your spells on your professions. All you have to do is check the spell ID from Wowhead (under "Links") and use it.
As mentioned above, don't be fooled, Scales research does not give you mail items, I just had a guild member suggest it does but its not a guarantee, its either leather or mail regardless of the type of research, but as mentioned above its better to research using the leather and not the scales. Also for any lower than 90 level players working their LW, the turtles just west of the Grassy Cline in The Valley Of Four Winds drop a lot of scales and provide good amounts of leather. There are often many people farming turtle meat so you just run and skin ;)
I only use it as a backup when I'm out of Exotic Leather and don't have time to farm more right away.
You have a chance to learn any of the crafted PvP gear and profession-specific epics from 5.2 with either of the two Magnificence recipes. You have a bajillion leather? Do Magnificence of Leather. Got tons of Scales? Do Magnificence of Scales....either way, both share a cooldown, take 20 of their respective mats to use

Do these only teach vendor bought recipes? Or any recipe in MoP? I don't care about having every recipe I jsut want the epic ones.
After acquiring my scales I learned Crafted Dreadful Gladiator's Linked Leggings. ([item=93587]) There is a daily cooldown as well, and with each use I will try to update what "patterns" I've learned.

Today i won one in LFR, i tried to use it after i learned it inside the instance and it said "you can't use that here"....
I'm just getting Leather patterns, regardless which "Magnificence" I try. No Mail patterns yet.
