This has no tangible in-game effect as far as mathletes are concerned, but the saavy PvPer knows that confusing or distracting the human controlling your opposing toon is a surefire way to victory.

Also it can provide a visual barrier for n00bs who refuse to use TAB when selecting targets in large crowds (Alterac Valley for example) lowering their dps since they have a harder time getting a target.

Lastly it's often tough for a rogue to get a good angle or to even stay in front of someone who is weaving in and out of the smoke, thus giving them more error messages that the target needs to be in front of them.

As a warlock with a couple DoTs that are instant and have no positioning requirement.... this is fun to play with. Mere amusement... but good amusement.

While totally useless from a gameplay perspective, the flare won't aggro mobs, hide you, isn't large enough to see from any distance, etc., they are a cheap way to get from 335 to 350 engineering.

I imagine the only good use for this is to mark locations where you want a certain group of players to stand during a raid encounter and the likes. Iirc the moonlight orbs from the lunar festival was being used for the same thing.
