Silver in the City

These coins touch a few interesting Lore strings. I've tried to explain all of them, as well as I can in a few lines.

• [item=43687] - Aegwynn, Medivh's mother was a fairly headstrong Guardian of Tirisfal. She was in constant disagreement with the other members of the Order, thinking that their ways of dealing with the problems (the demonic menace in particular) were based more on tradition than efficiency - hence her frustration with the mages.
• 
  
• [item=43686] - Alleria Windrunner was the eldest of the three Windrunner sisters - the other being Sylvanas and Vereesa. All three of them played a major role during the Second War and other important events. Ironically Sylvanas Windrunner did make the name known, but for entirely different reasons...
• 
  
• [item=43678] - Antonidas was the leader of Kirin Tor before he was killed by the Scourge. He was regarded as one of the wisest men of Azeroth, hence the quote from Serenity Prayer.

• [item=43676] - Arcanist Doan, found as a boss in the Scarlet Monastery's Library. Nothing special is known about him, but he seems to either have a crush on Briggite Abbendis, the current High General of the Scarlet Crusade Onslaught; or Doan is just sad, because Briggite's father, High General Abbendis didn't notice him.

• [item=43675] - Fandral Staghelm is one of the leading druids of the Cenarion Circle. His coin is a reference to the War of the Shifting Sands, where Fandral's beloved son Valstann Staghelm was slain in front of his father's eyes - event that left the Archdruid grieving for life.

• [item=43677] - the coin is reference to High Tinker Mekkatorque's infamous inventing skills.
• 
  
• [item=43683] - Turalyon (human, paladin) and Alleria (high elven ranger) were Khadgar's best friends, who became separate from him when Kadgar sealed the Dark Portal.
• 
  
• [item=43682] - Anasterian Sunstrider was the father of Kael'thas and king of the High Elves before Arthas and the Scourge invaded Quel'thalas. The coin is simply a sign of hope that Kael'thas will be a good leader... Ironically, he does lead his people well, but in an entirely wrong direction (to demonic hunger, and not noble glory).

• [item=43681] - Terenas Menethil II, father of Arthas Menethil. Yet another ironic wish - as seen in the WotLK Cinematic, Arthas acts in behalf of his people - the Scourge.
• 
  
• [item=43680] - King Varian Wrynn is current king of Stormwind. The coin most likely refers to the time when he was still a child, soon after Gul'dan's Horde razed Stormwind. Varian fled north with Anduin Lothar, where they met Khadgar - presumably in Dalaran. This is where and when the young Varian Wrynn might have made his wish.

• [item=43685] - Maiev Shadowsong was Illidan's jailor for some 10,000 years. After he was free, Maiev started a long hunt for him, and became really obsessed with it.

• [item=43684] - It has been pointed out that the coin reads "You sense the ringing of three tones in your head, the third barely audible under the others' din." As Isfreak points out, it may have something to do with the "three destinies" Medivh has - the first is what his mother planned - to be the greatest of all the Guardians of Tirisfal. The second is Sargeras's, to be used as a corrupted weapon. The third is Medivh's own - to break free of those destinies. As a supporting argument, the third tone (or third destiny, Medivh's own) being barely audible may be a reference to how little control Medivh had over his own life.

• [item=43679] - Muradin Bronzebeard led a dwarven expedition in Northrend, to battle the Scourge (before Arthas became the Lich King). The Holy Light didn't protect them very well, seeing how all of them were slaughtered, and Muradin was the only survivor - severely wounded and with amnesia.

• [item=43643] - Magni's father was Madoran Bronzebeard, Brann and Muradin - his younger brothers. The coin implies that Magni didn't believe he would make a good king, but knowing the he is the current king of Ironforge, it seems that he's doing his job just fine.

• [item=43644] - Just a normal pun reference to how forgetful peasants (and any other kind of working unit) are in (World of) Warcraft.

I hope that lifts some of the mysteries.

PLEASE NOTE: Throwing a gold coin into the Dalaran fountain will increase your chances of fishing up further coins for a short time. Do not make the same mistake I did and assume throwing them in is just a silly thing you can do for fun like throwing a paper zeppelin at another player. Blizzard should have really said more than "Use: Throw back into Dalaran fountain" on the gold coins. For someone like me who wanted to save the coins, it seemingly gives us no incentive to get rid of them

If you're curious, it can take upwards of 5 hours to fish up all the coins you need if you don't use the gold coin buff. Yes, I speak from experience. There should really be an achievement for not using any gold coins to get all the coins. >_>

Nobody has said where the fountain actually is... It's in The Eventide zone, in the south of Dalaran. Right near the Grand Master Fishing Trainer.
