The above is no longer true after 3.08, as sparks despawn before you can get a 3 stack, so you've got to do it the "normal" way, thought they did increase the time to do it to 6 minutes.
Locks can nuke him when he casts Vortex, just u need to know how :)
It is simple, but useful:
1.: At the start of the fight make a Demonic Circle on the ground.
2.: When he casts Vortex, let you in, then teleport quickly out. This saves you from loads of damage + you can do more dmg to him + healerz need to heal you less, saving mana + you can also get the spark, saving the risk of wipe.:) Hope this helps
