In the book Dune, by Frank Herbert, Shai Hulud is the name the Fremen (desert dwelling tribes) call the sandworms, which end up playing a big part in the culture of the Fremen and the plot. Dune is the first book of a trilogy. Many years later, Herbert wrote many more books in the universe, expanding the series. After his death, his son co-authored more. Wikipedia has a reasonable article on it.
