Obviously RNG, but in my experience it took about 2 hours of farming to get the rank 3 drop. I have a second account and was using it to realm hop for additional seam spawns. Almost all of the caves can spawn a seam. Look at the comments for [object=325874] for many of the spawn points.

<Picking away at the ore, you notice that much of it seems to turn to dust and fall to the floor at your feet. Enough even, that had it held its shape, would be enough to craft something with. It may be worth talking to Instructor Ulooaka to see if there's a way to prevent this loss from happening.>
