If you're not currently surrounded by spiders, you're in the wrong place to find the cave entrance. Try jumping down from a ledge. Keep jumping down until spiders try to eat your face, then look for the cave/burrow entrance.
I've killed him several times, not getting credit for the quest. No I am not in a party.
