As everyone stated, use overcharge before harvesting, then wait until the plant goes away before using the portal. It doesn't take that long and the portal will still be there.
Can't speak to if this actually is broken for herbalism, but for mining, if there isn't another node in range it does appear to just drop you on the node you overloaded :\
