How do you get different color variations for this? is it random?

You need to learn the pattern Remarkable Burnished Essence first for the red option. This takes 5 days and a Level 3 Tannery. You make 5 books of Secrets Draenor Leatherwork, 1 a day/cooldown. Buy the Essence pattern. You will need to add a RemarkableBurnished Essence to each piece you make, this will color it red. You do this by adding the Essence as an optional regent. To Make the blue pieces you need Impressive Burnish Essence this colors the pieces blue.

NOTE: You need a lot of Felblight and Savage Blood. Also a lot of burnished leather so keep your work orders going in your Tannery. This is not something you will be able to do quickly. You can speed things up with Gordon Fly Traps and Raw Beast Hides to make burnished leather. you get about 8-20 with a 1 day cooldown. Hope this helps it took some experimenting to figure all this out :)
