I found this gold to be annoying. It took around 10 tries or more. This race, for me, was all about using my Surge Forward and Skyward Ascent just right to get the best momentum build up, while also not getting hit by lava. Only spamming Surge Forward was not working for me. I, of course, started the race with Skyward Ascent and immediately used my Surge Forward on the second ring to get a quick start. From here, I mostly used my Surge forward before each ring, but I also tried to conserve a bit when I really got going and saving for some of the slight ascents or cresting them. I used at least two Skyward Ascents on the steeper ascents--just be careful not to ground yourself; I did a few times with some of them. I also occasionally saved a Surge Forward for the lava orbs, but I also generally just avoided them more than trying to go through them while focusing more on my Surges and cutting corners on rings when I could. I also used a Skyward Ascent and Surge Forward at the end ascent of the race.

I hope this helps, as I found this one a little frustrating.
