CHALLENGE MODE TIP - [npc=79545] (Boss 2/3)
The following tip can shave a large chunk of time from the 2nd boss encounter, giving you that extra boost to get Gold!
The first phase of this boss involves fighting [npc=79545] in the cramped rear portion of the train car, during which the group should spread out to minimize the damage from the [spell=163550]s and [spell=163539]s that he casts. At 60% health, he transitions to Phase 2, wherein he retreats to his [npc=79548] in the front of the car, and the sides of the train car open up allowing access to the middle and front portions of the encounter area.
One of the time consuming portions of Phase 2 involves killing adds, looting them and using [spell=160705] on the [npc=79548]. Each shell does 25% of the cannon's health, so 4 shells alone are required to break Nitrogg out (or 3 shells and another 25% of direct damage to the cannon).
It's possible to annihilate the [npc=79548] with a SINGLE [spell=160705] thus shortening this encounter SIGNIFICANTLY.
To do so, you need 1 [class=7], or 2 [class=3]s (a single [class=3] works, it is just less effective and won't shorten the fight by as much).
- A [class=7] should be using [spell=8177] with [item=41538].
- A [class=3] should use [spell=19263] with [item=45735].
Below are the steps to follow for this strategy:
- The tank and all DPS, including the [class=7]/[class=3], should move to the front of the car. The [class=7]/[class=3] should move right up next to the [npc=79548] and start attacking the [npc=79548] (to "bait" the [spell=166570]).
- If the [class=7] is a healer, have another DPS start attacking the cannon.
- The remaining DPS, tank and healer should start attacking the first two adds, which will appear at the front of the car, consisting of a [npc=79720] and a [npc=77483]. The [npc=79720] should be the DPS priority.
- All group members should remember to line-of-sight when targeted by [spell=160681].
- Once the [npc=79720] is dead, it's body becomes lootable and one DPS (who should be previously assigned) should loot the [spell=160702] and get into the [npc=82721] closest to the [npc=79548], ready to fire it when the time is right.
- As soon as [spell=166570] appears (fire on the ground around the [npc=79548]), the [class=7] should drop the glyphed [spell=8177] and ALL party members (except those targeted by [spell=160681] and the one DPS in the [npc=82721]) should run INTO the fire (Yes, it's ok to stand in fire here!) and someone should track of the stacks of [spell=166570] on the [npc=79548].
- The more people that stand in the fire, the faster the stacks will appear on the cannon.
- Note that all the while all of this is happening, more adds will be spawning and should be picked by the tank.
- Once the [npc=79548] has 9 stacks of [spell=166570], everyone should move out of the fire, and the DPS in the [npc=82721] should use [spell=160705] on it. This should INSTANTLY destroy the cannon, and initiate the final phase of the fight, where [npc=79545] reappears and needs to be DPSed down. No further adds will spawn at this point, although all existing adds will remain.
- A [class=3] can used glyphed [spell=19263] to the same effect, but a single hunter may not reach 9 stacks of [spell=166570] on the [npc=79548], even with 2 charges of deterrence. Two hunters would definitely be effective in doing so. Even if not quite hitting 9 stacks, a hunter performing this trick will still shorten the length of the fight (likely requiring only 2 [spell=160705]s to break Nitrogg out, rather than 3-4 normally).
- It is essential to be quick about moving out of the fire after 9 stacks are reached, as the [spell=166570] will stack on party members quickly once [spell=8177] has expired.
- Listed at the end of this post is a WeakAura that can be used to track the stacks of [spell=166570], with an alert once 9 stacks are reached.
- DPS players should kill any remaining [npc=77483]s, loot the bodies, jump into the [npc=82721] and use [spell=166543] to help finish off Nitrogg and the remaining adds quickly.
NOTE: In theory [spell=114028] from a [class=1] should work the same way as [spell=8177], but this hasn't been tested, and it is unknown how many stacks of [spell=166570] you can reach with this ability.
TL;DR version: Have a DPS attack the cannon at close range. When fire appears around the cannon, drop the [class=7] should drop the glyphed [spell=8177], have everyone move into the fire, and have someone shoot the [spell=160705] from the [npc=82721] once there are 9 stacks of [spell=166570] on the [npc=79548]. Kill the boss and remaining adds.
A VIDEO GUIDE to the above strategy is available here. Thanks to Jace DK for this great video.
There are a couple of WeakAuras that can be helpful when executing this strategy.
To use them, you need to install the WeakAuras 2 addon, then do the following:
